Ever had any trouble returning tools at sears?

have any of you had problems returning a broken craftsman tool at sears?
i always thought that it was pretty much no questions asked. ive returned wrenches that i have bent to reach around comething or even cut ti fit in somewhere. ive returned all kinds of tools that were clearly abused. never any trouble at all.

anyway, a frind of mine asked me to go to sears with him because they are giving him about exchanging a 1/4" wratchet. he had left it on his porch and found it as the snow melted recently. its rusted to the point that it no longer functions. they told him it was neglect and they wont accept it. i told him to go back and talk to a manager about this. he sais hi did but i doubt it. hes kind of weird about talking to people. i dont have a problem going as i have a few tools i need exchange also.

i was thinking i might try to clean it up a little so it doesnt look so bad but i think its realy bullsh@ the way they are treating him. i do plan on seeing if i cand find the district managers office # to have with me but other than that what else can i do. anny suggestions?

bleh...i called the district manager. basically they said the same thing that the manager at sears said. im gonna clean it up and give it a shot when i bring in my other tools. kind of me off though. ive never had a problem with this. oh well. not a big deal.

Believe me i have had alot of problems with them esp the one on lewis, here in toledo. They just refuse to replace it so i took it to the secor local and they said here you go, The ratchet mechanism was screwed.

I've had a lot of problems with returning to tools to Sears. I think a lot of it just depends on which store you go to. I no longer have to worry about it anyway since quality on craftsman ratchets and stuff has gone so far downhill, I now buy either kobalt or on extremely rare occasions, snap on. The only thing i have ever broke that was kobalt was cracking a socket, and they took that back with no questions asked, just like sears used to do.

Never had any trouble here. I can see how they would say neglect though. Id go with cleaning it and trying a different store if it was possible.

I have never had any trouble, but then I have never had any Craftsman tools. Canadian Tire all the way, baby! The best thing is that the girl at the customer service counter doesn't know enough about tools to recognise neglect. I've even returned broken 1/8" drill bits :D

Although after today's pressure washer fiasco I'm kinda pissed at CTC right now...

I actually started a thread "what brand of mechanics tools to y'all own" a few months back: because sears would not take back some of my tools. I went to a different location and played dumb, saying "I was just using it, and it bent". The took the wrenches back.

Shortly after that, I had the oppertunity to buy a used snap on set and box from a retired mechanic whose son I used to work with. Snap on (they come to the shop with a truck every two weeks) will take most stuff back, but not obviously bend wrenches, or broken sockets. For the sockets I find it funny: the guy always says, "You musta used than thing on an impact gun. You gotta use the black ones for that." Being a truck shop, we seem to break a lot of tools :)

i'm like Carm on this, i use all ct tools just for the fact they are the simpliest to return.i tried the man tools and got kicked out of the sears cause they wouldn't honor thier warranty.

Never had any problems returning anything to sears here, i've taken back vice grips in 4 pieces (rivets sheared off) and returned the same day with the new pair broken and they just smile and tell you to grab a new one. I've also taken back sockets with the chrome peeling and ones that atre beaten to death and look knarled and they exchange them no problem. But with our py tire once I took back a wrench that a piece broke off and spent 20 mins arguing with them to get a new one, that was the first and last time I bothered returning anything there.

Guess it varys from store to store though, has a lot to do with management.

They hate my ass at sears! I usualy come in with a shiznitload of tools to replace!

Best look I ever got was when I used a pair of needle nose plyers to check for Contenuity in a Breaker box at home, melted the ends off and fused them together! Told the guy at sears, "Well, a good tool should be able to hold a few ampers at least"! And they replaced it!

I took back two 1/2"-drive flex-handles within an hour one day, no problem. The guy asked, so I told him about the 36mm socket, the VW Beetle rear axle nuts, & the 4-foot chunk of pipe. He saw my 200+ pound arse for himself & gave me credit on the second one so I could buy a 3/4"-drive breaker bar. Laughs all around & they even called me when it arrived.

Maybe you can dissolve the rust & get it running again, then break it.:D

As much as they cost I feel like Im buying at least 3 of em when I purchase it. I feel like Im getting screwed if I don't trade it in at least once. I have taken in some abused items with no trouble. Heck, their tools not barbie dolls, they should take some abuse. Jason.

Won't use sman tools anymore for the reasons listed above. A few years ago, I switched to SK and will never use anything else. You can use a wrench as a hammer, break it and they replace it every time with a smile.

I've got a couple of split Craftsman sockets - will they replace them? I assumed they would though I haven't gotten round to it...
