Smog pump delete belt length Reply #15 – March 12, 2009, 06:36:39 PM Quote from: 5.0 bird;261169I just de-smogged mine a couple of days ago using the purple routing. I've heard about problems with the belt rubbing against itself with the green routing when the belt stretches and the tensioner pushes down further. I used an 87" belt so I guess the Mk has different pullies than the T-bird.Or brackets even. I wondered about the stretching myself. It has about 3 inches though with my 78" I am going to manual steering in the near future anyways so I will need a new belt before it stretches that much. Quote Selected

It took nothing more than a grinder to remove about 1/4'' of aluminum in order to develope the "new" stop point. Quote Selected

On Jcassity's thread he discussed placing the tensioner on the belt that leaves the WP to the ALT.It is very tight as is but if you place the tensioner on that part of the belt and run it as the the green model with the 77" I used it might work. You will probably have to alter the stops.I am going to draw this up real quickIt looks like there will be a problem with the belt clearing the top of the tensioner pulley, BUT the pulley in the pic is not fully extended. I am sure there will need to be some ginding like Jcassity did only on the lower stop. I think you *might* clear the WP with about 2 inches of clearance. Also another option would be a smaller tensioner pulley. FordTruckFreak, if you could please try this for me I would really appreciate it. Quote Selected

It makes for a nice clean look. It's the same basic parts used on Mustangs in '85 and '86 that came from the factory without A/C... Quote Selected

Save some of us some $$$ from buying the new one. They are only $35 from Summit though. And I bet lighter too.I think he wanted to try and get around buying the bracket though. I thought they were more expensive than that. I hope he gets a chance to try it though. Just for info purposes because everyone says it cant be done. I would still agree that it the kit wold be easier. Also, depending on how far the tensioner pushes the belt down there might be some issues with wrap on the ALT. Quote Selected
Smog pump delete belt length Reply #21 – March 13, 2009, 12:43:41 PM The issue with using it on Catbirds is that you have to swap the power steering bracket for a fox Mustang specific one. THe eliminator will not work with ours...Judging from that pic I would think it'll be pretty hard to route the belt in such a way that it passes on both sides of the tensioner while keeping proper tension... I dont know if there are smaller pulleys that could be swapped on. That might help with clearance issues, which will also allow you to use a smaller belt and have a better wrap on the ALT and hopefully increase the tension on the pulleys. I wish I had a motor to experiment with this stuff with. FordTruckFreak, if you are willing to try this for me I will send you an extra tensioner to grind on and alter. Quote Selected

I do agree that the lower one seems to have a better wrap. I needed the belt ASAP so first solution I hear I took. Now I can hear the leak at the header/Hpipe joint. Threads wore out so the bolt slipped out a little. Going to use a bolt and nut like I had to do on the other side of the same header. If anyone knows of any other conformed set ups please post them.SE I am going to be adding yours and Bobs now, and the list starts....Stock fox Cougar brackets and as you can see the a/c is in place. A/c works fine so no reason to remove it. Quote Selected
