So we all know that the supercharged engines need the intake bypass valve so they work in reverse. Otherwise the supercharger would just suck all the air out of the cylinder. So knowing that, how does the turbocharged version work in reverse? The engine is trying to suck air backwards, yet the turbo wants to spin forward so I don't see how it works. Is there some sort of exhausting intake bypass valve on the turbo version? Also, if it does have the valve, does that also mean that it can make boost in reverse? Like how much boost? Like 5 psi or does it go over 20?

I was thinking "how can you prove that the engine is running backwards" when it hit me, I can use a balloon. So I got a balloon and put it around the exhaust tip. I figured when I start the car it will inflate, but when I put it in reverse it will suck the air and balloon back in. So I started the car up and went in reverse about 10 feet then turned the car off. I went and checked the tail pipe and sure enough there was no balloon, it got sucked inside the tail pipe. So I got back in the car, started it up and drove forward about 5 feet. I got out and looked on the ground and the balloon was right behind the tip. So when I pulled forward it shot the balloon that was in the exhaust back out and thats why it was on the ground.

So yea, engine runs in reverse in reverse, now I just need to do it again and see if I get full boost.

Real reason I'm asking because a friend is getting a 93 Corvette and he wants to race me. I said we can race to 30 mph because I think if I go from reverse I'll get better weight transfer and beat him, but I'm concerned about making full boost since the turbocharger will be spinning backwards.


There's debate as to whether or not it's serious.

Did you read the balloon experiment? :wtf:

You reversed ten feet, moron. The balloon was under the car until you pulled forward five more feet.

I'm all for car customizing and whatnot. It keeps younger people out of trouble, for the most part, and gets them creative which can possibly lead to a career. Everyone should have the chance to make their cars unique.

However, I'm really doubting that there's long-term value associated with the cars...then again, look at our rusty heaps...

Our rusty heaps had a V8 option......and are real easy to upgrade to the quintessential V8 from the decade -- the HO -- and way beyond.  The Turbo 4 was leaps and bounds ahead of everything else from the era as well and also has tons of potential.


The Cobalt -- even in the Forced induction SS form fights an uphill battle against the Mitsu EVO, Subie STI, BMW 135/335, Dodges SRT-4 cars, and the Ford Mustang (GT, GT500 and all the other spin offs).

That's some stiff competition and the Cobalt IMHO is undergunned to face it.  So it would need something to make it stand out to be noticed in the annals of time.....
I'm at a loss there because I really can't think of a reason why they stand out......Our cars?  Gee.....being on the cutting edge of leaving the automotive dark ages comes to mind....

The Cobalt is also a lot cheaper than every one of those cars you just listed, except the Calibre SRT-4, which doesn't even belong in that company. Even still, have you read much about the new turbo Cobalt? The 2008 model overshadows the old SC'd SS in every way. 14.0 @ 103.6 right out of the box; 1.2 seconds and 8mph faster than the '07. 55hp and 60lb/ft more than the blown version, with a suspension tuned on the Green Hell. The only car under $25G (US) with launch control, and has a no lift-shift feature. It's a serious car, all of a sudden. Too bad they did nothing to update the looks so you can tell the difference between an SC and a Turbo.

Yeah, it's a Chevy economy commuter in essence, but  it has a big ace up it's sleeve. If anyone can give a turbocharged Neon respect, it's time to step back and look at the Cobalt again. A small coupe that can lay claim to the numbers it does, and has a model (XFE) that makes 37mpg should make this a big winner. It needed a reskin with this upgrade, though.

Oh yeah. The Mustang doesn't compete with the Cobalt in any way. Especially the GT500.
