power windows

When I tried to roll the passenger's window back up earlier today, the digital dashboard flashed off-on, digital clock and climate control screens went off-on, but the window wouldn't move an inch. When I flip the switch (in the center console) to roll the window down none of that seems to happen, but usually the window won't roll down at all. After flipping the switch a lot of times (and hoping nothing electric would get damaged), I finally got the window back up.
Driver's window sometimes has trouble, too, rolling up or down, but doesn't result in things flashing off and back on.

Anyone any suggestions what it could be/what to look for?

Sounds like the window motors are need brushes or maybe you window is out of adjustment" sitting tight in the track" It maybe the window switch is messed up and needs to be cleaned or replaced. Also it could be those gears inside the motor also. Hard to say with you being there to test it myself.

I tried to take the switch out, but I couldn't get the wires loose. Will I have to cut them?

its interesting you had electrical problems when the switch was actuated.  Id have to look at the wiring diagrams and see if the window motor circuit breakers are somehow tied to those systems that cut out on you.

im away from my wiring diagrams now, anyone else wanna see wtf happened to this guys digi display ect?

would be great if someone could take a quick look at the diagrams, as I don't have them myself!

Hmmm...I would suspect a bad voltage regulator. That same set of problems happened to me once a long time ago, in my old black '86. I went to roll up a window and everything in the car flashed off for a split second. Had my alternator checked and was told the integral regulator was shot. I ordered a new one through the Ford dealer, installed it myself, and that solved the problem. One of the contacts on the old regulator was completely gone; it had shattered and got pulverized in the motor assembly.

So...your problem just may not be in the dash. Although it could be a bad ignition switch, if it were me, I'd get the car's charging system checked.

Is there a light in the digital dashboard that warns when the alternator outputs less than 14V? One of the digital gauges has a battery sign, so is that the voltage of the battery or the voltage the alternator is outputing?

Nope. I had the battery run down twice because of under performing alternators. The battery light never came on. That's why I installed a volt meter.

The alternator would have to be completly dead or the belt broke before the light comes on.

well, the cold weather has made things worse (worse for my wallet, better for the car ;) ).
It seems I've been driving around with an underperforming alternator all the time. Since I don't drive alot at night and it stays light longer in summers etc... I never really noticed (except for maybe the windows issue this thread started with). Now with the cold & dark weather my 2yr-old battery was dead/very low lots of times, so I checked things out and it turns out my alternator only output 10V or so. Hope the new alternator will solve the windows problem and the battery hasn't been damaged too bad.
