I got mine from a Taurus, 90 something 3.8 I believe.  Off the bat my stock bolt wouldn't fit through the top hole but it was easy to drill out.  And the larger 3G bumped off a welded nut on my lower slide bracket so I cut that part off.  Other than that it mounted just great.  Looks like it belongs there.

Mine came from a 3.0 taurus.I couldn't get the 3.8 alternator to bolt up to my bracket,it was too far across from bolt hole to bolt hole.If I remember right.I have one in the garage.I'm going to try it again to be sure.If it DOES work, then I have two extra alternators.

3.8 taurus = 8" mounting points
3.0 taurus = 7" mounting points

But if you're cool like me and got your motor from a Mark you need the 8" case, not without modification though.

Well as I remember:
-The alternator itself
-The plug and some of the harness for connecting the built-in regulator
-4 Gauge cable and I used a 120 amp I think Mega Fuse to connect it to the starter relay.
-Keep the lower mounting bolt from the donor, I drilled out the top ear on the alternator so my stock bracket bolt would fit through
-A hacksaw or something (remembered that CougarSE is right, the 3G didn't really line up properly with the lower bracket but once I cut off the back brace that mounts to the engine block, the lower bracket was able to swing to whatever width I needed, I just left it loose until the belt was tensioned)
-I forget offhand where I connected to the factory harness but once someone here pointed it out it wasn't hard.  I can look if anyone needs to know.

To hook up a 3g in an 83-86 1g style external regulated car you need the plug for the internal regulator and the 4ga cable and a fuse/circut breaker. The easy part of it is the external regulator has a plastic tab above the plugin that has the wires labeled  with the same letter as the internal regulator on the new 3G style alt. Very easy To test it before I cut into the harness I just used some spade connectors on the new plug and pluged them into the plug that plugs into the external regulator. It worked great then I just cut off the external reg plug and soldered in the new plug. I will tell you that the white wire coming out of the 3g's regulator plug will just get hooked up to the one wire plug on the side of the 3g alt. Then the 4ga with the fuse setup to the starter relay.
The newer ones with the built in regulator and the big rectangle plug isn't one I've done but the 2 big wires in the rectangle plug are just the charging wires to the starter relay. The little one I think goes to the gauge/light in the dash.  Not sure on the small wire so hopefully someone will chime in.

I have a friend with a 3.0 Taurus. He shelled the transmission. I need to look at his. So all I do is solder the wires together and run 4 gauge wire with an inline fuse to the starter relay?

An 83-86 is easy.

The Y/W wire on the plug goes to either the output stud on the alt or the + side of the starter solenoid.  Either will work.  The W/Bk wire plugs into the "S" connector on the alternator.  The G/O connects to the original G/O wire on the old external regulator (that is no longer needed).  Solder those two wires together.

Connect the Alt output to the "+" side of the starter solenoid with the appropriate-sized wire and inline fuse.

Done....
