Unfortunately it isn't as simple as looking over the car for traces of clear since it was resprayed black

*EDIT - I found some color chip pages online and sure enough, they show it is clear coated. It's interesting that some '86 Mustangs the same color aren't clearcoated.

Welcome to the wonderful world of trying to track down even the simplest bits of information about these cars.

For simplicity, from 1984 on, all metallics were marked as basecoat/clearcoat.

And I would love for that to be the definitive statement.

But this is Ford, and these were 1980's cars with poor documentation, so anything can be correct. However, it's been my experience that that's generally the case: base/clear for metallics, and acrylic enamel for solid colors. Generally. There are some exceptions to the rule, such as black base/clear that Ric has on his '85 (special order/snuck through), and I know that Nick has on his '87 XR7 (presumably because it was an XR7). I've yet to see a base/clear Oxford White but it was possible. Same with the Scarlet and Canyon Reds.

It's also possible that some colors that started the model year as acrylic enamel was later changed to base/clear. Running changes did happen.

What's on my site is published information from the literature. Being that the literature is only about 75% accurate, though, it's possible that the interior/paint books have updated info. I'll double check that. One of these days LOL.

FINALLY!! OK, here's your VIN breakdown, 1984 Ford Thunderbird FILA, 5.0, 3.08 OPEN 7.5" rear, built in Lorain, OH. I can't see your tranny code, but it's an auto. That should clear some stuff up, and YES that means your car came with the factory 5.0 as an option.

Mike, I don't think it's the original rear. It looks "newer" then the rest of the car. What is the option list so I can figure out what all I have and I don't. Thanks for the brakedown and sorry for the jack.

It was repainted the original color. I could have changed it at the time as I had the jams and the underside of the hood and trunk done at the same time. I liked the silver though.

Yup, it was a 5.0 car originally.

The 84 TC is cloth. Haloed (open) seats.

That's why the 3.55 TC 8.8" is sitting on jack stands waiting to go in :D Just gotta fix the wheel bearing/axle shaft/differential pin problems and it's good to go. Funny that it would have 2.73 gears with the 10" drums and sway bar though...
