Going to Exhaust Doctor soon...need advice.

Well the time is rapidly approaching when I will be going over to the local Exhaust shop to have my exhaust system done. However, I am in need of some advice.

Right now I've got the stock setup just past the cat. A two foot pipe comes out of the cat and that's where I took over.  When I bought the car there was nothing there, making for an extremely loud ride. I bought a Turbo 2 ler and clamped it on there. No tail pipe out the back, just the ler. It's ok, but still not pleasant to the ears. Plus It's so close to the body and driveshaft, I'm convinced it'shiznitting something while driving as I keep hearing and feeling any annoying vibration. The whole exhaust is kinda loose as it is.

Anyway, I was planning on going in to this place and telling the guy that I just want the car to be as quiet as he could make it. Of course I realized that by saying that, I may be paying $300 or more.

I could say I want him to "sure" everything up, and take the ler I have, weld it on, and run a "Y-pipe" out the back into duals. That too might be expensive.

OR!....I could tell him to sure everything up, and just put on a tailpipe.

See...I'm at a loss. I don't want to saying something to light up the dollar signs in his eyes. In all honesty, I just want the car to be as quiet stock. That's it. I'd like dual exhaust, but if it's going to cost me WAY more than just a regular tail pipe out the back, I won't do it.

What should I say? "I have $150, make it quiet!" and walk away?

I know my ler guy will put 2 lers and tailpipes on for 150 bucks. 

If you are gonna run 1 ler then don't let them go over 150 bucks, in my opinion it's a rip off.  GO DUALS!

I'd like to just have him take my current ler, weld it on, and remove my clamp. Then, Sure up the rest of the exhaust as it seems to be to easy to move. Then, from my ler, weld in a Y-Pipe with duals out the back. The problem is, last time the guy charged me about $50 just to weld in a new ler, and I provided it! Granted he had to cut my old one out...but still.

Hey, TucanSam, if you read this, know any places in town I can have this work done relatively cheap?

Get a quote for a stock replacement cat-back. My Chevy Econobox I had awhile back needed assistance as the exhaust was rusted out right after the cat. Got a new cat-back installed for $170 and I must say it was money well spent. It was driving me nuts!

Just another option to think about.

Yeah....Where would I get the quote? Do most Exhaust places have the necessary parts to do that? Meaning, I could go to Honest Joe and ask him what it would cost to run stock exhaust cat-back?

Most exhaust places can will give you a quote to order OEM exhaust pieces and install them.  I found this was actually more expensive then custom.  When I got my exhaust done, one place I went to wanted me to go with the fake '88 V8 dual exhaust setup (Y to ler, Y to dual) and wanted to charge me >$300.
 
You might want to go to several places, tell them what you are thinking and see what they say for price, etc.

My advice is: Call Summit, by the COMPLETE 2.5" Mustang exhaust (Part # SUM-680946, $178.95) make sure you say "LX" about 20 times (so the tips are straight). If you want turn-downs instead of tips, order 2 (WLK-41250, $17.39 each). Otherwise get a set of tips of your choice at least 12" long or have the shop weld in some 6-8" long straight pipe before the tip. DUMP THE LER YOU HAVE. Having 1 ler with 2 tailpipes will not quiet the car down. Do it like I suggested (almost every part needed is in the kit, so they have you on labor only) and your car will be much quieter, and not lose any performance or economy.

Why does summit's website say it's for a 96-97 Mustang GT? I looked up the part # and that's what it was under. If It works, I'll probably but it.

It's for an 87-93 GT and LX, it fits other fox cars too, you know, like TBIRDS. ;)

Aero turbine :)  My buddie has one on his 02 cougar. But it is not this edzact same thing, it is underneath the car and has fake duals out the back. To be dead honest, the thing sounds awsome! It is the V6 btw, not the 4cylinder...  it is a real good sounding car!!

and have a lot of money left over.

best thing is,, you can now bend exhaust for cash.  Let the owner crawl under the car and mark where you bend,,, and that way you just do the bending while they test the fit.
