Where is it at? Does any one know?

Just in case it is year specific. This is in my 84 Turbo coupe. I have done some research here awhile back. My Heater-A/C fan only works on high.  From what I've found out this is the blower motor resisitor. Not the fan or the switch.  But does any one Know where it is located so I have some idea where to look. Behind the dash things are F'n thight.  I did see pic of the heat box that showed it mounted on it near the fan but that was for a 89-93 some said the caption. So if you have replaced yours or know basically where it is let me know. Also any ideas where to get one.  Or if one from a 88 model would work.  Or even a part number to maybe cross reference.

Should be in the area around the blower. Rigth behind the glove box. THe air from the blower motor keeps it cool.
  Hope this helps

ok,, the above is correct,,, just fiddle along the hvac box behind the glove box and you will see a connector going to a device mounted with two screws i think.

anyway,, when you undo the connector and remove your resistor pack from the hvac, you will see large looking springs.  off to the side of these springs (the resistors) is a built in fuse.  In my case, i also have a bad system as you do.  I jumpered my tiny fuse with a very very very small guage copper wire.  Just a thin strand for testing is what i called it back then but its still in place and soldered in.  its so small its along the lines of 36awg.

After i originally did this , i activated the lower speeds of my motor and found that my my wire harness did not get hot nor did the connection.  As i suspected, the mouse that built a little nest in there made the motor pull too much current and the fuse on the resistor pack blew.

im guessing its a fuse cause i dont know what else it could be.  I suppose you could sub in an actual fuse imho but im ok with the tiny jumper wire for now.

The shop manual calls it a thermal limiter resistor assembly. If air stops circulating the resister coils over heat. The thermal limiter is a spring loaded contact that is held closed by wax. the wax has a melting point of 121*C (250* F), When the wax melts the contacts open.
They say its purpose is to prevent heat damage to the evaporator case.

Thank You all! Does anyone happen to have a line on where to get one.  Or is there anyone that knows if 83-88 is the same? I have a 88 cogar parts car and If i rember the fan worked at all speeds may that one will work. I need to get the one out the cougar tommarow and checkthat against the 84 on my car. they both have manual heat-A/c. Any If any thing I'' let you all know when I know if it works.

Kool I hope the plug is the same. Kind makes me think that even if the plug isn't the same I could just use some wax from a candle and reconect the factory style conection to the circuit. I didn't have time to get this done yesterday and today I have to be at work by 11:30am central time. But I won't be home again until fri. Atleast I'm gonna be in INDY IN but still have to work all week. Hope to work on it this coming Sat thanks again for al the help.

We'll I took the time and replaced the blower resistor in my 84 turbo coupe. I took some pics of the back of the resistor and behind the dash in the 84. The 84 part number is E35H 19A706-AA,  88 part number is E35H 19A766-AA.  I couldn't find anything like wax. Just plastic, metal-coils, and One resistor/diode thing.  Any how I will tell you that in both the 88 cougar and the 84 t-bird it took either a 5/16"  or a 8mm. either will work espically since it is in plastic. I did the 88 cougar first So the glove box door had already been removed to fix the one in my 85 cougar 2.3t. I just used a nut dirver to get both screws out. real simple job. But in my 84 the dash is different so I took just a little more time. In the 83-84 models you'll have to remove the piece under the dash (2 screws) and use a wrench to get the bottom screw out. I used a gearwrench it worked great.  Well here are those pics I Promised.

The white-tipped rocket-looking thing is the thermal limiter.
