Installing an auto parking brake switch

So I found a brand new auto parking brake switch......for $20:D . I'm going to install it but I have a question. Do I have to put the car in neutral, install it, put the vacuum lines on, and then pull the little red pin? That's what the parts guy at the Ford dealer said but I don't know why I would have to go through all that just to put the switch in.
