Changing 5th gear in TC T5

I was wondering if it is possible to put a higher (?) 5th gear in an 88 TC T5 to lower my revs on the freeway and increase my gas mileage, while retaining stock first through fourth gears (btw, this is behind a 5.0)...?  I also might put a mustang spec T5 in the car with 4.10's in the rear and want to do the same, but either trans...can it be done and how big of a job would this be?  How much would it cost to have a shop do it?

i dunno what the ratio is in the TC for 5th. i think most of the later T5s were like .82 or something. the T45 (at least one out of a mach1) is like .62 wich is the same actually as the T56 i have.

i suppose its possible but i dont have any info to support it at all...

This was discussed over on the Turbo Coupe board some months ago. Don't remember the outcome, but one of the members was talking with Hanlon to see if it could be done. Try a search over there...  http://www.turbotbird.com

As far as chainging the gears... 5th is in the tail housing, so I wouldn't think it would require a complete dissambly..

hmmm..interesting.  So it could be possible to combine the TC T5 main with my 89 Mustang Tail...?

The tail housings are identical... I meant 5th is mounted on the rear section of the main case and is enclosed in the tail housing. Its accesable by removing the housing and popping off a couple of snap rings.

The thing I don't know, is if the gears for 5th are actually different in the two versions(all the others definatly are, as are different versions of the 5.0 tranny). The final ratio may be determined by the by the tooth count on the cluster gear, as I believe 5th is driven from it.
