TC Cluster Help!! UPDATE, need more help!!! February 03, 2006, 01:01:41 AM I need help! The pinouts on Carmens site don't match my car. I have atleast 6 wires that are not on his list! My car is a last run 88 so maybe some is gona be like this. So far I've got the turn signal lights working, the cluster ilumination and speedo. I'm not sure on the oil and temp but those wires did match the color code from Thundercats. They should work. Also my cluster seems to not use the check engine light. It has a small harness and plug for the firm ride and that is it. The hole for the check engine light has no provision for a bulb on the cuircutry. And the last thing, that balast resistor looking thing is getting HOT! Like enough to burn your fingers! Quote Selected
TC Cluster Help!! UPDATE, need more help!!! Reply #1 – February 03, 2006, 08:55:41 AM did you check eric's site also? i remember when i did the swap in my 85 a few of the wires were different color, but i just went by the pin info and everything worked fine. Quote Selected

Like enough to burn your fingers! The "check engine" light on the TC cluster had its own harness, it was not powered through the cluster connector or printed circuit board. The "firm ride" light is the same way - its own harness. As Fordguy said, the wire colors are not so important as the pinouts - Ford seemed to use whatever color wire they had lying around sometimes...The resistor is supposed to get hot - that's why it's ceramic :hick: Quote Selected
TC Cluster Help!! UPDATE, need more help!!! Reply #3 – February 03, 2006, 10:00:19 AM Now what do I do? I just pulled all the pins out at once and started repining them, and the colors dont match! Ahh, test probe and multimeter here I come! Quote Selected
TC Cluster Help!! UPDATE, need more help!!! Reply #4 – February 03, 2006, 08:05:21 PM Let me know how everything went. I picked up a 120mph/200kph anolog cluster from an 88 5.0 bird that i am putting into my 87(swapping out base digital) For the most part the diagrams i have are right but there is a few colors that just don't quite match up with the diagrams i got from Coolcats. TC Cluster Help!! UPDATE, need more help!!! Reply #6 – February 04, 2006, 11:48:31 PM Ok for the tach to work on my v6 I need the resistor on the back ( i know wich one it is) to be of 75k ohm's. Now it has a 100k ohm on it now. If I take a 22k ohm resistor and solder it on in paralell with the 100k shouldn't that provide me with a 78k ohm value? Shouldn't that be close enough to work? Radio shack doesn't have a 75k ohm resistor. Quote Selected
TC Cluster Help!! UPDATE, need more help!!! Reply #7 – February 05, 2006, 09:03:16 AM You have a PM, but I'll repeat it here:Whenever you have resistors in parallel, the total resistance of the circuit is always less than the smallest resistor. Remember, a resistor "slows" electrical current flow - the higher the resistor, the more it slows it. By adding resistors in parallel you're providing additional paths for the current to flow, so the total resistance for the circuit is less.If you want to have a total of 75k, try a 51k and a 22k in series. In a series circuit you simply add up the values for the total, so 51 + 22 would give you 73k, which is pretty close Quote Selected
TC Cluster Help!! UPDATE, need more help!!! Reply #8 – February 05, 2006, 10:08:01 AM Thanks Carm! Now I have to do some digging, radioshack didn't have 51k resistors. Quote Selected
TC Cluster Help!! UPDATE, need more help!!! Reply #9 – February 05, 2006, 11:21:35 AM Try a 47 and a 33 if you can't find 51 and 22. 47 and 33 will give you 80 - a bit high, but close... Quote Selected
TC Cluster Help!! UPDATE, need more help!!! Reply #10 – February 05, 2006, 05:53:58 PM Looks like I've found a 330, that in paralell with the 100 will give me around 76. Almost perfect. Thing is radio shack closes at 6, and its now 5:50. Gota wait until tomorrow. Quote Selected
