New toy

My old laptop was getting old (2 years) and was starting to show its age, so I decided the time was right for a new one. I decided I'd go toward the high end this time, so I bought this Gateway (pictured below). Specs:

AMD Athlon64 4000+ (Finally back in an AMD, baby!)
1024MB system RAM
100GB HDD
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X600 graphics
8X dual layer DVD+/-R/RW/CDR/RW "Super Multi" drive
15.4" WXVGA @1280X800
Integrated G wireless adapter
Winders XP Media Center Edition

Let me tell you it's a HUGE improvement over the old 2.4GHz/512MB/60GB/integrated graphics/60GB/CDRW/15"SVGA with no integrated wireless Dell :D

Did your dell develope a bad case of floppy screan?  Mine is going in, under warrenty, for new hinges.

Nice computer, I especiall like the idea of a 15" + screan on a laptop.
Are AMD processors better than intel these days?

Nope, the screen is good and tight. That's not to say the Dell didn't have its own issues, though, including two bad power supplies, a bad battery, and the screen itself was bad (no backlight) when it first arrived from Dell.

AMD has been eating Intel's lunch for a few years now, ever since the Athlon 64 came out. I've heard good things about the Intel Centrino (mainly for the battery life and cooler operation compared to the P4 - you could cook an egg on the old Dell when doing even such light tasks as listening to MP3's), but I couldn't bring myself to buy a laptop with a processor that was clocked even lower than my old Dell. This Athlon 64 is clocked at 2.6 Ghz, which if you listen to AMD hype (and every magazine review I've read) performs like a P4-4Ghz, hence the "4000+".

Doesn't your 1150 have a 15" screen? My 1100 did...

When I got mine I didn't wanna pay the extra $250 for the 15.?" .  My screen is 14" (diagonally measured).  But I'm very happy with this computer and the tech support / 3yr. warrenty.

On another note, has anyone seen the Panasonic "Tough Books".  Some guys at work have them for use in the field.  About the only thing they won't do is run at cold temps.  Other then that they are industructable (almost).

I hear you about a P4 in a laptop.  The laptop I use for Architecture renderings is a 3.0GHz and even with the fan on high and one of those plug in laptop fans below it the thing gets hotttt!  Not to mention it sounds like an aircraft taking off with all those fans.  It renders better than many of my friends Athlon XPs do though and it destroys the Centrinos when it comes to rendering.  For other computing stuff the newer Centrinos seem to be a bit faster though.

Your Gateway looks almost identical to my brother's eMachines laptop (which is owned by Gateway, so it shouldn't be a surprise)  His isn't that fast though.  When it is time to upgrade I think I might look into a Athlon 64 since it should be tons cooler than a P4, while rendering faster than a Centrino or older Athlon.

I love the displays on those Gateways.  I saw a dude playing Doom 3 on one of them, and I swear it looked better than my buddy's $1200.00 Dell 21" LCD monitor.  Just on a side note, has anyone here ever checked out Falcon Northwest's computers and laptops?  They have to be some of the most expensive machines ever.

DakotaEpic: I drool over every Falcon Northwest ad I see, kinda like I drool over Z06's, GT's, etc. The things are hellish expensive, but they are top notch - Maximum PC magazine considers them to be among the best in the world (along with Alienware and the Dell XPS series)
