Low rpm shudderng

The only things that have changed over the last month is the weather and a new fuel filter. For some reason, between 1200-1600rpms, no matter which gear its in, my car will shudder horrible if giving it so little gas that it won't downshift, but will slowly accelerate (AOD). Kinda annoying when trying to go 30-50mph the entire drive during a commute, with it sticking near that range both in 3rd and OD.

Below this area and above it, the car performs and runs like normal. Idles fine, accelerates at 1600rpm+ fine. It seems to happen more often in the cold mornings and when the car's just warming up. Other than this, I don't know what to tell you. Its just about time for a complete tuneup, but I don't see how any of that could cause problems in such a narrow and low rpm band. Anyone have any ideas?

I think eric had this problem. He got a new EGR and it helped but did not eliminate the problem.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

It DOES sound like tune up time.  Every time I've needed new plugs I would notice a hesitation/vibration at steady speed between 35-40 MPH.

You'll notice it more in 3rd and 4th due to the fact you are in those gears longer.  Usually you are just accelerating through 1st and second.  Steady speed cruising is a 3rd and 4th gear deal.

oh, I DO know its more noticeable in those gears and why. It just doesn't make sense to me as to why its only in that rpm range, where lower and higher run like normal. I'll get a tuneup soon and see if it helps (as it should), but any other suggestions? Seems the only logical thing to try

I've heard that the trans clutches will chatter if you run it at too low RPM. Supposedly there's not enough pressure to keep them engaged.  Mine has done that a couple of times in 3rd at just above idle speeds, but I usually shift it into 2nd if I'm going that slow under load.  If you're only going 50mph or less, you don't need to be in OD anyway.

it could be a coolant tempature sensor.
