That tube connecting the exhaust manifold to the carb...

It got bent and broke off the manifold at some point in my engine tear down. My Chilton manual has virtually nothing about my carburetor written in it but my uncle tells me that it's another polution control device. He said it may be difficult to repair and that if I just sealed the hole my carb may not run the same. I'm planning to get aftermarket headers down the road and as far as I know they wouldn't accept this connection anyway but I'd like to know everything you guys know about this.

How big is "that tube"?

As big as your arm? Connects to a sheet-metal shroud that surrounds part of the manifold? Goes to the air cleaner snout? Warm air for the carb to prevent icing and all that.

As big as your pinkie finger? Goes to the choke coil housing on the side of the carb? You can feel/hear a small vacuum leak where it should be attached to the carb? Sucks in some hot air from around the manifold to help get the choke open quickly.
