Engine work on my 5.0L September 13, 2005, 06:07:38 PM Just finished with a little engine work on my 84 Elan, replace the stock ignition system with a 'one wire" Proform distributor HEI. Replace the plugs and went with 8MM plug wires. Man what a difference. Quote Selected
Re: Engine work on my 5.0L Reply #1 – September 13, 2005, 11:48:19 PM I may need to change my '83 "Heritage" to an '84 "ELAN", for racing. I obtained a "Elan" badge for the trunk, but need to know is the dash marked "Elan" and any place else? Thanks for your help. Fred P.S. They only go by the exterior, I don't have to worry about the I.D.plate. Quote Selected
Re: Engine work on my 5.0L Reply #2 – September 13, 2005, 11:52:20 PM why would you have to change it to an elan to race it? Quote Selected

Re: Engine work on my 5.0L Reply #4 – September 14, 2005, 10:30:12 PM O.K. guys, here is what I've run into. To run as an '83 3.8L V6, I need a E3SE-9425-DA intake manifold. There ain't such an animal, but that is the casting number Ford gave NHRA. I can change and run as an '84 ELAN because those parts are available, but only as a carb'd 3.8L V6, (Canada and Mexico only). NHRA has the specs wrong, but it works in my favor, (.46 higher compression), but hard to find camshaft blanks. I'm pulling the motor in October and building a NHRA legal '84 3.8L V6, and hope to run the index (15.80 sec). Mine is very tired but runs 16.0 sec with the factory camshaft, so I hope there is more in it with a new motor. The only other Aerobird runing in NHRA "stock" class is a '86 Turbo Coupe at 12.9 seconds,in J/FIA (fuel injected/automatic). Mine will run V/SA the six cylinder class. Hard to make a car run when your the only one doing the testing. I've never seen so little aftermarket equipment made for an American car. We deserve better. Fred Quote Selected
Re: Engine work on my 5.0L Reply #5 – September 15, 2005, 03:14:50 PM Fred, the answer to your question is Yes, not only is the Elan emblem on the passengers side trunk deck, it is also on the dash just above the glove box. Thats the only 2 places there located on an 84. Quote Selected
