where to play football,, gimmie a break

City officials met today on a conf call with the NFL to discuss the new season of the Saints.  It lasted approx 2 1/2 hours and more meetings will take place over the next couple weeks to over come the NFL's hardship brought on by the hurracaine.

Now, lets regroup for a moment and ask ourselves what is more important here,,,?

I would only hope that we are not so preoccupied with an NFL team to ovelook the fact that hospitals / old folks homes and houses still contain hundredes if not thousands of dead people as well as those still seeking assistance and refuge.

just a vent session from a dumb white boy from west virginia sitting in iraq now in disbelief.

As callous as it is to say, the show must go on. It's a business thing. They're not going to put the entire NFL season on hold because one team lost its home. They would lose millions. The Saints have to play somewhere or forfeit at least 8 games.

(having said that, I've pretty much lost all interest in football except for reading a few articles now and again when I have nothing better to do.. so don't mistake me for some rah-rah football fan running to the defense of a beloved sport or whatever)

Natural disasters may hit our area.. I should know as well as anyone else, after last year.. but we can't expect the rest of the world to grind to a halt because of it.

I will say this, however: It has long been known by anyone who reads up on this kind of thing that a disaster like this was inevitable. Perhaps the NFL should've had researched alternatives beforehand for cities facing inevitable large disasters. A good portion of the football season overlaps hurricane season, which potentially affects every team from Texas to New York.. and an earthquake could hit the California teams at any time. I'm not saying they should or even can plan for every disaster.. but "Nawlins" getting hit by a storm like this and losing the levees was one of those big glaring potential disasters waiting to happen.. and now it has. When a major earthquake finally hits SanFran/Oakland, if it happens during or near football season, are they going to go through the same public wringing of hands over what to do about the Niners and Raiders as if they never knew it was coming?

it's a valid point, talking about what to do. it would be a bit of "normallcy" for those that are displaced or working on rebuilding to have thier team playing, something to take thier minds away, if even for a few hours.

if they are smart, they will do it somewhere nearby and let fans in free if they can prove they are from new orleans or nearby cities.

edit: though yes, they could have some broad plan to cover displaced teams due to unexpected events.

Another Saints Season Ruined Before It Begins

NEW ORLEANS—Front-office executives of the New Orleans Saints football team provided a much-needed dose of normalcy Monday when they announced that, for the 23rd year running, the Saints season had been ruined before it began. "I'd say this is even worse than when Mike Ditka traded away all our draft picks to get Ricky Williams," said Saints vice president of pro-personnel operations Bill Kuharich. "But there's one thing we Saints can always rely on: our chances for a winning season being shiznitcanned before we play a single down. We're proud to have carried on with this tradition despite everything." The National Football League has declined the Saints' "mercy rule" request to be allowed to forfeit all their home games, saying the team must set an example for its home city by being blown out in every contest.

They knew about it before then.  The first time a storm hit there once it had been "established" should have been enough warning to people......but hey, if you choose to live in the line of fire, so be it....you knew it could happen.
