3g alternator swap. questions

So that final stretch on the 86 XR7....the 3G alternator upgrade...

I have directions http://rothfam.com/svo/3g/  My special 52 7/8 " belt is 4 days away....grrh

I have a new 3G pig tail....for the new alternator...

Here is what I have...missing the original alternator connector....

http://www.crystalcomputersupport.com/carstuff/altwire.jpg

So my car seems to only have 3 of the 4 female blade connectors in the factory wiring harness that voltage regulator used to plug into...

Any ideas friends...

Thanks,

Travis

Install the alternator mechanically and hook it up like i explain in the link. No big deal only one wire back to the car to pick up ALT light or Key battery. You can even use the stock wiring by bridging the 2 heavy alt wires together with a connector for the charge lead. So basically all you need out of the old plugs is the lead that goes to the dash Alternator light. Simple to find with an old fashioned test light. key the car to the run position hook a test light to the POS side of the battery and back probe the regulator plug until the lamp on the dash illuminates. Once you have found this wire the lead to the I terminal and the bridging as i posted in my photo. Finished done over no big deal!!!

Here is how it is Done right at the back of the alternator

A to the big lug of the alt with the heavy charge lead
I to the dash indicator lamp or Key battery
S to the alt small single spade connector.

DONE!!!!!

The 86 EVTM shows the 2.3 and 3.8 came with the 1G alt. This has the external regulator.
The 5.0 came with the 2G with the internal regulator.
The 2.3 has an ammeter and no warning light.

Correct an ammeter and it makes absolutely no difference as i explained he needs either an alt light or key battery to the I terminal.

I would not rely on those two tiny black and orange wires that feed back to the electrical system. (They are black and orange on a 5.0 - yours might be a different color). You need to run a heavy gauge wire (4 gauge maybe) with the appropriate fuse for your alternator. So if you are running a 100 amp alternator, install a fuse holder inline with the heavier gauge wire and install a 100 amp fuse. Then clip the connector off the 2 black with orange wires and tape them off. the heavier wire goes to your solenoid on the left side lug. If you install a heavier gauge wire and then reinstall those 2 black and orange wires, if for some reason a heavy load burns out the fuse, you can still not have any protection by feeding power back through those undersized wires. I am not sure if there is an inline fusible link with those, but in any case they are not meant to handle the loads that a 3g alternator puts out. I would also install a heavier gauge ground strap between the engine and the firewall to make sure all leads are sufficient for the extra amperage.

As long as the electrical load stays the same, the current draw will stay the same, no matter how big a rating the alternator has.

Thank you soft that is my point exactly. An alternator never puts out 100% i suggested reusing the factory wiring for simplicity. Once again the 1988 TC works just fine and is loaded down with tuns of elecronics and works fine. Nothing wrong with heavier wire but people get ridiculous.
