Is it safe to end exhaust at lers with turndowns ?

I am installing a pair of flowmasters on my 88 sport coupe  and I want to end the exhaust at the lers with turndown tips. Is this okay to do or do you need tails ? My mechanic said you need the turndowns in the case of a backfire which could hit the gas tank, and if it has a leak, well you know the rest :bangford::bricks1:

You don't need tail pipes but you do need the turn downs I had a diff run dry from the hot exhaust blowing on the rear end

And it will drone like crazy .... That bothers some people but not me I run dumps on everything lol

One more thing it might make it hard to smog some techs don't want the probe close to the rollers

Legally, the answer to your question is yes, you must have tail pipes that exit at the perimeter of the vehicle (although the law does not specify where on the perimeter, so you may exit in front of the wheels, behind the wheels, at the bumper, or whatever).  This is for safety.  Your car may be emissions exempt, but if I remember, NY also requires a safety inspection as well, and you're never exempt from that.
