What do you mean by "chunk"? They don't swap like a 9 inch rear does.

the carrier and pinion assys. the mustang has 2.73 and the old merc has 3.55. so basically do the shims and crush sleeves stay with housing or carrier andvgears.

like tom said.. there's a 99.9999% chance the housings are machined differently.. it's about a 1 in a million chance of them being the same.. you just need a shim kit and know-how with the right tools

Tom, What do you use instead of a crush sleeve?? I've built a few 8.8's & 9"'s and a couple Mopar axles and have always used them. I'm just curious what the advantage would be.

Shims from housing should put you close, but Tom is right. Measurements must be taken or diff will shell for sure. Crush sleeves can be re-used if you take the crush out of them. Experts say to never do this, and I don't suggest doing it either. Crush sleeve eliminators sound great. I have never heard of them until now. That is the way I would go.
