Replacing batt cables

Ok, I have become dis-intrested in my cougar so am going to start driving my 83 Bird again but have a question. I am going to change the battery cables as these original ones are very brittle. The neg cable has a small bracket that mounts it to the fender apr0n and then it continues down to the block.  Does that bracket also work as a ground? Everything at the parts store is w/o the bracket so should I replace it and forget the bracket or use 2 cables, 1 from block to apr0n and 1 from apr0n to batt?
