Power Steering Pump variance?

I bought a new pump to install on the new engine, just to keep things clean. There i go thinking...

For the life of me, I can't get the hose fitting to screw into the pump. It looks like it is right there and should grab the thread, but doesnt, just spins right on the hole.

Are there slightly different threads available on common for pumps/lines? Both the original, and new pumps look the same, and feel the same when i put my pinky in the hole.

What gives, any ideas?

I ran into something like this when I dropped my HO into my Sport. I had to use the pump that was on the HO, since I had busted the the nipple off where the return hose fastened to on the stocker.

Anyway, to the point; there was an adaptor fitting or something like that in the Stang's pump, I had to take that out before my Tbird's high pressure line would thread into it.....hopefully it's an easy fix for you.

Post on corral.net:

Ford used a revised metric fitting on the pump side of the high pressure line starting in 1990 to help stop leaks and they changed the reservoir color at the same time. I assume Ford changed the reservoir color so it would be easy for Ford to tell the difference between the pumps. (Assembly and warranty work?)

-Wouldnt be the first time a small change wasnt noticed by the rebuilders.

I had a problem like this when swapping from my 88 3.8 to my 87 5.0. I ended up using the 3.8 power steering pump. The inserts were different. One seemed to push in, and the other screwed in. It was a while ago.

So... I have a new hi pressure line on the car.  I need a new quik ratio pumps for my new quik rack I will be buying.  I want to keep my hi pressure line, so I should get a Mustang pump like 87 or 88'????  Pre 1990 and it should work correct, right?????????????

The thread I took that from on corral basically said just keep your old pump, and the fitting on the pump will swap out. So you can use the original fitting(and hose) on a newer pump.

***EDIT***

Clarification.

When i took the old hose off, the pump resevoir fitting came off with it. So what i thought was the hose fitting, was really the pump fitting. When I removed the "pump fitting" off the new pump, I was able to screw the old hose/pump fitting right in.
