5.0 Thermostat Housing with Extra Hole January 30, 2011, 07:40:16 PM As many of you know I've been chasing a problem with my temperature gauge in the car. I'm looking to install and aftermarket gauge semi-permanently to do some comparisons, but I don't have a place on the intake to install the sending unit for the gauge. My only thought was to find a thermostat housing that has a pre drilled and tapped hole in it where I could put the sender. I called 2 parts stores today, and they didn't seem to know what I was talking about. Does anyone know where I can get one? I don't want an expensive billet aluminum or anything, looks don't matter too much, just need the extra hole. Anyone know? Quote Selected

5.0 Thermostat Housing with Extra Hole Reply #2 – January 30, 2011, 09:01:07 PM I drilled and tapped my housing. I believe I tapped it with 3/8" pipe threads. I put my factory sender in the housing and my aftermarket gauge where the factory sender was. Quote Selected

5.0 Thermostat Housing with Extra Hole Reply #6 – January 30, 2011, 09:31:52 PM It did not crack because I did not over tighten the fitting into the housing (sealed it with silicone). I drilled the whole through where it looks as if there was to be a hole. Then I used the 3/8" or 1/2" pipe thread tap (don't remember which size). I was taught to run the tap in leaving 7 teeth showing at the top of the tap for pipe thread because these are tapered. I realize not everyone has access to pipe thread taps. Quote Selected
5.0 Thermostat Housing with Extra Hole Reply #7 – January 30, 2011, 09:56:11 PM If this is the one for an 87-95 Mustang 5.0 then O'Reillys has them as well. Its a Murray brand with P/N 84884 and runs about $12. Have one on both cars and they seal up and have the threaded hole in them you are looking for.Darren Quote Selected

My thought was if I'm going to install it, I know there is a problem, I might as well make it permanent. Seeing as when I turn the blower motor on high, I can see the temp gauge move, I'm thinking it's probably not something with an easy fix, and may need to wait until it's warm out. In the meantime, I don't want to be without a temp gauge. Quote Selected

As soon as the snow stops, I need a day to shovel everything out, and then I can install it. But at this rate, it may be a couple of days. :/ Quote Selected
