emergency brake light keeps coming on

So i was sitting in some heavy stop and go traffic today, didn't notice until i got to the bank my emergency light was on. This puzzled me because my brake was not pushed in or anything. So i park turn the car off and go into the bank for about 5 minutes.

Come back out crank the car and the light is still on, so i pushed the brake in then pull it back out and the light stays on. So i pull out and jump on the interstate and the light goes off after i reach about 70. But then it comes back on about a mile down the road and stays on the whole way home.

Parked the car when i got home and looked it over and no leaking and its got plenty of brake fluid too. Brake peddle it not going to the floor or getting stiff either. Last time this happened in my blazer was the result of a blown out wheel cylinder but they aint leaking.

The only two things that cause the light to come on are the parking brake and the master cylinder level. Older cars had the light wired off the proportioning valve so a drop in pressure on one side would trip the light. Our cars aren't wired up like that. I also found out the hard way that if you tap something electrical into the hot wire coming off the ignition switch that feeds the light(I think it was purple), the light will glow with whatever drain is on it. I wired my auto dimming mirror to that wire and every time a car would come up behind me, my brake light would come on. Took me a while to figure it out. Guess I should have used the book instead of just checking for 12 volts when I hooked it up.

Is the e brake pedal going all the way up when it's released?

I think there's also a switch up under the ebrake pedal.. make sure it's not that first...I actually put something in between mine years ago to shut the light off temporarally till I repaired the tension on my e brake spring

So i drove the bird today, the light was not on when i started it, so drove it about 30 somethin miles and it never came on there and back. So idk maybe sitting in stop and go traffic for a long period of time off and on the brakes triggered it.

It's already been said, but check your brake fluid level. That's the only reason my "brake" light has ever come on.

the sensor on the master cylinder can go bad, or one of the wires can. This will cause the light to come on too.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.
