Blown Transmission... March 20, 2010, 10:14:28 PM ...in my nitromethane R/C car.I have a Traxxas Jato 3.3 R/C car, which can run 0-60 in less than five seconds and reach a top speed of 65 mph, depending on tire diameter. I've owned it for several years and I've gone through plenty of tires, half shafts, control arms and other small items. I never thought I would blow the transmission (two speed auto) on this car, but I did it today. The car would no longer move under its own power, so I thought the primary clutch had failed or spun a bearing. When the clutch checked out, I had a bad vibe about the transmission or the differential. Upon removal and tear-down, I discovered that the primary input gear had a fracture which let loose a guide pin. This guide pin mixed around in the transmission and effectively destroyed the output gear and the differential gear, in addition to chewing up the chassis where the rear diff meets up with it. It's not really relevant to our cars, but technically interesting for some people. This is an expensive hobby, so it's likely that this car is going to sit in a box for at least a month or two.The first image shows the guide pin next to the fracture in the input gear. The last image is of the rear carrier, which was rebuilt last fall with new spider gears, c-clips, oil and gaskets. Quote Selected

Blown Transmission... Reply #3 – March 21, 2010, 09:45:58 AM Wow that little pin really made a mess of things! Is it possable to buy used parts to keep it going until you can buy new? I know there was couple guys last year talking about thier r/c cars on steelcitystangs. I think one of the guys had some car parts for sale and someone else saw the r/c's in the background that started the conversation. Quote Selected

Blown Transmission... Reply #6 – March 21, 2010, 06:17:04 PM Thanks for the link, Paul, but that truck is a little too large for what I do. I spend more time on flat hard surfaces. He does have a new 3.3, though. That might be something to jump on.Well, it cost far less than I thought it would to make the repairs. I spent $26 on all the replacement gears, gaskets, dowel pins and diff fluid. New transmissions go for far more than that. I rebuilt the trans and serviced all other moving parts, including the piston assembly for the disc brake and the half shaft joints. I just took it out for a romp and it moves faster now - it almost pulls the front end off the ground when you nail the throttle... at speed. I forgot how dangerously fast this thing can be.I'll give it a week before I break something else on it. Quote Selected

Can you imagine how fast those little wheels must be rotating to propel that thing to 68mph?Quote from: FordTruckFreeek;315248he did say he's got over a grand in itYeah, but that's $1,000 scale dollars. Which is like $25,000 regular full size dollars. :D Quote Selected
Blown Transmission... Reply #10 – March 22, 2010, 12:05:04 AM My dad has been into radio controlled air planes for quite some time. He had a motor that spun over 28,000RPM's and he said it isn't even a race one. I would really like to get into them, but lately he has been 100% into the electric pre made stuff. Quote Selected
Blown Transmission... Reply #11 – March 22, 2010, 12:47:47 AM I've got just about all hpi stuff. Savage 21 w/3spd upgrade, LRP 28r(almost 4hp, 33,000rpm) and I swear you cant break the thing. Run into buildings at almost full speed( near 45mph), jumped at least 20' in the air, and the only thing its done so far is slightly bend the roll bar. Hpi rush just got a cheap new engine because the idle screw fell out of the old one. Have broken a shock on that one when I ran it into an oil tank, lol. 12 year old kyosho QRC 4x4 truck - breaks on command slightly run it into a door and break all kinds of stuff. Oh, have an hpi rs4-3 on road car-mainly robbed for parts to keep rush going. Kinda boring having something you can only run in a big parking lot:( Quote Selected
