Windows Vista

HI!!

Wife is operating HP model 9M9357C desktop with Windows Vista Home premium SP2; 64 bit;  AMD Phenon TM 9550 Quad Core proc. The computer is 1+ years old.  We have had problems with this pc unlike my HP (less than a yr old) which seems fine.  In the beginning we were using Webroot for firewall/anti-virus on hers until a problem came up with an intrusion of some kind. As our provider, Mediacom provides free Firewall/antivirus (CA--aka Computer Associates program), we then went with that when CA made 64 bit program available---and had a hell of a time getting the firewall installed--that was overcome.  CA found some kind of virus and after quarantine, the computer seems OK for the most part now.  Along the way, something or some quirk keeps shutting down CA on us.  This is what happened to Webroot and I suspected that Windows Vista's security program was behind this mania.  Of course, operating with no firewall/anti-virus (unknown to the operator) is potential suicide.  Anyone know of any problems like this?  This so called Windows problem is what I suspected caused the intrusion in the first place with Webroot.  While suspecting that Windows security is conflicting with the CA/Webroot(?) on hers--on the other hand, my HP PC desktop with Vista has been fine--no issues.  I still believe some kind of latent virus/trojan is lurking in the Mrs. HP because of periodic quirks--like her Outlook kind of crashed--but that has been resolved with little effort.  I am either ready to call on hired help or buy some kind of virus kill program if such are available and won't conflict with CA.  Any ideas--is this a Vista nightmare???  Thanks in advance.

Personally I would get rid of the 3rd party firewall and download MSE from Microsoft website. Vista is rather secure by itself and  Microsoft Security Essentials works great. That's all i run.

My other suggestion would be to make the move to Windows 7. I doubt your machine has any trouble running Vista, but it will be a much better machine with 7 on it. I heart 7.

Try running a boot virus disc, you can download bit defender for free. It helped me a few times. It runs itself before the operating system starts.

+111 for windows 7. Its a solid XP replacement where people with vista tended to go back.

Heres your best bet...

Since this is a 64 bit machine you can't use my favorite programs so we are limited but this should work...

-----------------------------------
And Specs Im guessing on Some:

AMD Phenon TM 9550 Quad Core proc 2.2 GHz

U have a 64 bit system so it has to be 4 or + Gigs of Memory, probally DDR 2 aswell

-----------------------------------

1. Download and Install Malwarebytes Anti-Maleware which is a free anti-virus scanner:
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
    Scan for viruses... Full Scan
2. Download and Install Spybot- Search and Destroy
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Scan for Spyware - Full Scan
3. Defrag the Hard drive
Defrag all the Drives not just the c if u have two or more!
4. Download CCLeaner
    http://www.ccleaner.com/

Use the cleaning tool and the registry cleaner tool.

When your all done using these tools Uninstall them, no reason to keep them in your pc.

If you wanna make your PC Faster...

1. Uninstall all your 3rd party virus scanners and etc...

2. Install AVG Free Virus Scanner
http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

This is one the best virus scanners out there currently..  better then a lot of these paid ones and it runs much faster.

The smartest choice really would be to buy windows 7 Home Prem 64-bit for a $110.00
Get all your files out of the PC on a external and do a FRESH install. < Make sure u format it before u do the install >

Then I would recommend to install AVG Free Virus Scanner and you will be fine and your pc will run much faster!

This would be faster and a smarty move personally...

Ah you guys and your anti virus programs.
All antivirus was ever good for in my opinion was the trash bin.
It slows down your pc and is a waste of time(depending on what you do).
If your carefull on what you download you will never have an issue.
I have 5 pc's all running without anti virus and have never goten a virus in the past 14yrs.
I watch what i download and the sites  i visit and all my pc's are fast and healthy.

There is no reason NOT to run a lightweight protection service like MSE on a modern machine.

What if your not careful and are a fool! Then I think it may be viable.
