strut tower mod for cc plates

Mustang struts are shorter and have less suspension travel than a Bird's.  SN95 calipers won't fit Bird struts.  Max Motorsports CC plates have spacers that move the plates about 1" off the strut tower so that the bearing plate will clear.

After trying every adjustment available, suspension travel was still too short, limited by the bearing plate clearance.  I replace the bolts with studs, and the spacers with washers for a gain of ~.25".

Today, I modified the tops of the strut towers so the plates can mount flat on the struts (just a washer between them).  The underside mounting brackets are the same. Not sure if MM intended to sent two identical instead of symmetrical, but that's what I've got.  So I cut the welds on one and flipped it so that they are symmetrical now.

After getting the alignment done again, I might have to do more cutting to get the settings right.

interesting. i have looked at adding more camber adjustment to my setup in the same manner, but my upper coil mounts are already very close to the towers. ill hafta look at them real close to see exactly how much space is there.

I've used Mustang struts on a stock front suspension and didn't notice a difference but they are not the same.

A cutting wheel and thread-loc is all you need to modify the bearing plate.  If you're going to enlarge the strut tower hole, then it isn't necessary to modify the bearing plates.

got any pics of the mods to your plates?
i dont have MM plates, i have KBP plates that were originally a mustang set. they are flat on the bottom already...my clearance issue is with the coil itself on the inside of the strut tower. i can barely fit a finger between the coil/upper bucket and the sheet metal.

I'll get some pics.  You might also go to MM's site and get the instructions for the CC plates.

The MM system at the top of the strut is a coil, a top spring perch, bearing, bearing seat, and some spacers/collars that fit snugly around the strut shaft.  Those collars keep the top of the coil assembly below the strut tower opening and provide some height adjustment.  More collars go on the studs to keep the bearing plate above the strut tower.

Spacers like the one sitting next to the plate goes on the strut shaft and on the studs that locate the plate to raise it above the strut tower.

How much of the strut shaft threading can you see above the retaining nut?  If you've got 1/2" or more, you might try some collars to move the strut downward.

ive got quite a bit of thread showing above the plates, but pushin that down would reduce my bump travel which is at a premium already with my ride height.
i run the minimum amount of spacer that will keep the upper coil perch below the tower sheet metal.

are you using fox or sn95 struts?

I've got sn95 struts (yellow cobra konis)

Do you have room to move the cc plate upward (away from the strut tower)?  Maybe a combination of moving some parts up and others down relative to each other will get it?
