93 XR7 3.8L, Head gasket prevention?

Is there any way i can prevent my 3.8 from blowing another set of head gaskets.. The car has 65k and i dont know how they were blown originally, im going to be giving the car to my mom soon so i can have my 88 xr7, and i just wanted to make sure it was alright before i gave it to her... On another note my girlfriend has an 88 ls with 151k on the motor{3.8} runs like mint and has never had the head gaskets replaced..Whats up with that?

i think they can worpe over time but i dont know much when it comes to them. but if they are not on right they will go bad faster and the mostlikey thing i can think of would be overheating it would cause that to happen.

If they were replaced properly with the improved gaskets then it should be fine for a long time as long as the rest of the cooling system is up to snuff.
