8.8" Once-over...

I finally cut the 8.8" (3.73:1, Traction-lok, quads) rear out of my buddy's old Capri. In removing it I noticed that I'll be needing new brake hardwrae (a given) and possibly some new seals. It's leaking from the front where the driveshaft yoke connects. What is the best course of action here? If it would be cost effective, I'll just take it in and have new seals and bearings installed, but I'd rather not get into too much expense. Someone give me some guidance here. The rear only cost $50 so even if I spend $200 or $300 getting it back in good shape, it's still a good deal.

You sure it's an 8.8?
Capris only came with a 7.5.
you could take it and get the seal installed for cheap,seals are like 10 bucks and with the rear out of the car they won't carge much to install it.
Why are you doing bearings?

Well, it's a shiznitload bigger than the 7.5 I pulled out of the old junk Cougar and I suspect it was installed by the previous owner. I played around with it and it definitely is a 3.73 and it doesn't seem like it needs bearings, I thought it would be cheap insurance though... but I may just leave it go.

yes that is a 8.8

if i where you i would at least while it's out...

replace the axle bearings and seals and replace the cover gasket and new fluid.. and did'nt you say that the pinion seal was leaking? if yes then yes while your at it just replace the diff bearings and pinion bearings and seal. since to do a pinion seal right you will need a new crush collar. all the parts seals and bearings should only cost about $150.00...

if you don't have the tools to do it then have a shop do the work..

and while your at it change the upper control arm bushings their only about $12.00 for the pair..

Yes, I think I might have to call around to some different shops (Eric, know a good place to get this done at?) and see who can go over the whole thing for me. Having the 7.5 let go at 70mph was scary in itself... don't wanna chance it with this one. I've got a guy who's getting me the quad shock brackets from a TC and I'll probably be getting the CHE control arms, have not decided on adjustables or regular ones... probably just do regulars. I'll probably just spring for a new cover as that one's all rusted.

I'd personally take the time to sand, primer, paint it since it's out.

Yep, I was sanding on it before I took those pics, I need to get the D/A out and knock all that rust off. The tubes aren't too bad but the housing has some serious chunky rust. Does the rear get very warm? Shouldn't have to use any hi-temp paint or anythign right?

Well, you have to put grease in it, so i'd assume friction is involved. In that case i'd believe it would get kinda warm. Whether that warrants the use of hi-temp paint

. I'd say if it not much more, go for it. Better safe than sorry.
