88 cougar value opinions

I have a lead on an 88 cougar xr7.  Black with black turbines, gray leather with no rips, 151k miles.  Dash is cracked bad and the guy removed it to fix it and never reinstalled it and wants to sell it.  AC is R134 but needs fixing and needs a heater core.  Texas car, so no rust and has a recent paint job.

There are a lot of assumptions.  It had no drive train problems 2 years ago when it was parked.  I may not be able to drive it when I look at it.

What do you guys think is a fair price for this?

up here in salt country I would say about $1200.
But that really doesn't help you in TX.

$300 is parts car pricing.  It's not a parts car and not far from running.

It's worth what you're willing to pay... Setting two years, I wouldn't pay $300 but that doesn't mean it isn't worth $500 to you...

With the dash apart, needing AC work, heater core, etc, I'd figure $300 -$400 Tops... Likely nobody is going to buy it in pieces, offer him $250... At a salvage auction(or back row dealer auction[not running]) it wouldn't bring $150-$200 around here..

In '97 my white bird came through a dealer auction for $1015(including bid fees), plus I gave my buddy $200 for his trouble... Bought the red one in my sig for $420 in '01 from another auction... Both were drivable cars with a little over 100K mi and zero rust... The red Bird does have a bunged up RF fender...

My car is in much better shape than what you described this at and my car was given to me. That's $0.00 dollars I gave for mine. I'm guessing that the car you are looking at might be worth about $300.00 in se metal. All the problems you have listed means you are going to have to put a considerable investment into it right off the bat to get it running and somewhat presentable. As a matter of fact I think I would not give anything for it, I would ask him to pay me to remove it from his property.

Good advice guys.  My opinion has emotion in it.  That's why I asked for yours.  I was at $500, but I'm going to offer lower.  I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks

put it this way i was offered a 87 turbo coupe for 600 with no rust but it had been gutted for a race car. Before everybody gasped someone else bought it so its not ona  dirt track however now it has a 514 in it and is on a drag strip.

I'd say between ~$400-$500 but start lower and work your way to a compromise. If he accepts your first offer you know it was more than he was expecting to get ;)
