Cars you wish you would have never sold...

Gotta agree with Ductape... You want simple, find a '87-'93 4cyl 5 speed Stang... You can beat them unmercifully an they jus keep on goin...

I bought a '87 with 106K back in '93 for $1000 that had the syncros screwed in the tranny(some dufus put gear lube in it)... With $80 worth of parts from Ford, I beat it apart with blocks of wood, repl the cones and blocking rings and beat it back together again... Good as new... Probably the easiest car to work on in almost 42 years of owning vehicles(probably 350+ I used to buy and sell, even had a used car salesman's license for a few years)...

Youngest Daughter and myself ran it up to 192K mi before she sold it and bought a new '01 Saturn... AFAIK the valve cover was never off the engine... When I bought it the engine was dirty and the VC gasket was seeping... I gently snugged it up and the leak stopped, so I cleaned the engine compartment and never pulled the VC...

The successor to the Pinto. My '79 Pinto got the piss ran out of it every day for 189k worth. I never even adjusted the clutch. Gave it to my brother and he ran the piss out of it for another 6 mo before he totaled it.

EDIT: You know, that car would be a great DD now. ;)

Yeah the Pinto's were about as simple as it got.. I owned a DD '74 Wagon(actually hated that car, hurt my back)plus 3-4 others I bought to resell... I was thinking of cars you can still locate fairly easily and cheaply... The Stang never hurt my back...

I've tried to keep the best ones, but I've had to let some go. Here are a few I wouldn't mind having back some day:
1987 Turbo Coupe - Son's car
1987 Super Coupe - Son's project car
1934 Ford - My project car

SHHITTT that's MY '64 Galaxie 500!!! Actually had two, both burgundy... First was 289 three on the tree(converted to 390 4speed), and black interior... Second was a 390 Cruse-O-Matic(Which i despised the auto and sold it to my dad)... That one had a gold interior... Also had a Black/Red int parts '64, I used for the front sheet metal(after a little altercation where I removed the front suspension from a moving van)...

No regrets here. My dad on the other hand...

I get on his case every time about trading his '71 Comet GT.
He bought it new, installed headers, nice chrome air cleaner over goofy stock unit, '69 Mustang dual exhaust, cut the hood scoop to make it functional, aftermarket wheels and tires and put on hood pins for good measure. I think he swapped out the carb too but don't quote me on that.

He traded the Comet in 1973 for his second regret, a triple black '73 Dodge Charger with a 400. Since he married my mom in '73, he wanted a bigger car. If he could have either back, he'd take his Charger for sure.

So where did they end up? My dad saw the Comet a few years after he traded it. The guy had beaten up the body pretty badly and painted the interior panels all white. He found out after he sold the Charger, it was rear-ended by a VW Bug and burned.

Pics of the Comet the morning he traded it.

I regret getting rid of my 85 Stang. Granted it had a dead V6, and I had no money to do a V8 swap (or 2.3T swap) at the time, but the body was perfect. Couldn't even sell it for $300 so I pretty much gave it to my ex's dad. Last I saw it had a 460 in it... he sold it to someone else shortly after that and the last I heard it got hacked up. Fantastic!

VW Foxes are cool*. They're nice and simple to work on, get good gas mileage, and go forever, kinda a spiritual successor to the Beetle.

*Especially the wagons

And most VW elite act like it's the Brazilian stepchild, because they never sold it in Germany. It was the perfect car to learn on. As you said, they're super easy to work on. I was so used to that car that I once blew a rear sidewall out, and was back on the road driving with the full size spare in under five minutes.

Matt,

Regarding the '70 Challenger, do you know if the paint on the car was original or if had been repainted by the time those pictures were taken?

EDIT: After looking at it more closely I see too many things that aren't correct, so it appears it was repainted by the time these pictures were taken.
Do you know if your parents bought the Challenger new?

Love the S4 !

The paint was not original. :D  My dad had it painted in red lacquer since he didn't like pink. We were never sure if the 71 spoiler came on it since it was a 70 1/2 Panther Pink car. The car was not completely done in those pictures. Later on he located the correct center caps. The trunk badges were put on later. He also put on the front chin spoilers.

Here's a couple pics right after he bought it

He bought it in 1986 from a junk yard (Bob's auto salvage) in Cookeville TN for 3500.00. It had been drag raced and had a full race cam in it. The options on it were:

E87 440-6
N96 Shaker (silver)
Torqueflite automatic
AM radio
heater
3.55 sure grip rear axle
panther pink paint
black vinyl/cloth interior
manual drum brakes
manual steering
white side stripes
go-wing
sport slats
15" rallye wheels
dual sport mirrors

After he bought it he started restoring it and got it nice. Then he sold it in 1989 at a Kruse auction in Branson for a lot of money at the time. After that we don't really know what happened to it, but in 2001 the current owner contacted us and sent some pictures. It belongs to a Daniel Banker in Cocoa Florida, and has been repainted the stock color. And still has the incorrect color hood scoop, black stripes, front chin spoilers (that my dad put on), and 71 rear spoiler on it.

My friend picked up an 88, i think. 4 speed. It was a decent basic car. But he was the kind that wont put any money into a car, no matter how little money it needs. The hood ended up blowing up and busting the windshield out and he let it go for $100.

And yeah, It was so easy to bark 1-2 shift. The radio that wasnt bolted in would fly to the back seat every time.

I totally would have driven that car too nowadays. I bet it would get 40+ mpg highway and 30+ in town.

I once got 717km out of one tank with 'Mulder' (it's a Fox, it was the late 90's, and I was a teenager........ it made sense at the time), and that was back when $40 would be a lot of fuel. :(

Thanks for the clarification Matt,

That is a very interesting car especially with that combination of options.
I can't really blame your Dad for making the color change. Panther Pink was probably way out of vogue by that time. ;)

Thanks for sharing.
