need advice

how much do you think its worth? he says 1500 obo, but im gonna try talk'n him down. what does everybody think its worth?

i found a turbo coupe. it's a 87 5speed with 150k. the exhaust is "new" but the y pipe looks like its held together with rubber hose and hose clamps. from what i see theirs little rust, but the deck lid  lock is ripped out  "who knows what kinda water dammage their is in the trunk"  their is one good sized dent in the drivers side fender, and a nother smaller one on the passanger quarter. tail light is cracked, but it comes with im assumeing 2 new ones, head lights are yellow... almost opaque.  interior is "ok" dash has 3 enormious cracks, the arm rests on the door pannles are ripped off, i havent sat in it or heard it run so ill know that much more tomorrow after 4:15pm when im sopposed to meet the guy. i didnt see any frame rust when i looked under neath, but i did notice that it needs pads and rotors.

For $1500 after the things you have said that are wrongthat thing beeter run like it did when it was on the dealer lot way back when.  Sounds like she has been neglected and the price is too high.

I agree with Paul........................given the cosmetic condition maybe 750 range and thats generous .....if it really runs perfect possibly more.  I doubt it runs perfect given the exhaust repair you describe. Remember chances are the PRC is shot  The turbo could be on the way out.  The abs rotors for that car ain't cheap.  Not to mention replacing 2 dented fenders & yellowed lights

Straight talk. Just tell him what you think about the car (nice like and all), Then tell him what you'll offer. Straight simple and to the point.

Tell him that you can only go to 750 or whatever you will go too.  If he doesn't bite then you might just want to walk away and consider driving to find your next one..  Check ebay.. I  know they are on there cheap periodicaly.

Take what you want to offer the guy($7-800) in cash, talk to him about all the problems the car has and the costs involved in repairing them, pull out the wad 'o cash ($20's are purdy :grinno: ) and offer him that much. If he says no walk back to the car with the wad 'o cash in your hand by your side, he will probabally change his mind. That or he wants way too much for it and your better off leaving with your money. (keep in mind in some neighborhoods walking around with a wad 'o cash will get you stabbed:p) I would find it hard to give more than $700 unless the rest of the body and underside are rust free.

But it WILL take $1500 to buy it....

Offer 700.  Tell him you've checked the value and it's not good.  If he states he's put alot of work into it, ask for reciepts but otherwise tell him the value of this car isn't worth more than 400 dollars.  If you really want to get that car, don't let him know how bad you want it...

I paid 600 bucks for my bird... which it does run great, but i've put probably 600+ into it and i'm still not finished.  I also know even though i've put all this money into it, it's still not even worth close to a 1000 dollars... My car has an 8.8 rear with disc brakes too... and a 5.0.  The only reason i bought it was impulse.  I had to have it, and i shouldn't have paid that much for it.

And you really got to consider what your girl thinks... If anything it should look nice more so than run great.  Looks are alot to women!

Hah, blu, you think you paid too much?  Back in the day before I realized that these cars hold little-to-no value I paid $1600 for an '84 Cougar with 63k and rust everywhere.  It was a one-of-a-kind optioned car, but I paid WAY too much, none the less.  I paid too much for my T-bird too, even with a perfect body and low-ish miles, it was $2k.

Ha I paid 300 bucks for the Cougar!

Manson, I bet Turbocoupe's car would be alot better of a ride!  Just buy it before cat jam so you can make that long ass drive with both cars...  :deal:

ok, hears the deal with it. it shifts fine clutch is in good order. i couldnt take it out to far without plates to see how the turbo works but he says its ok, hes a mechanic... lol... anyway lights work, starts right up, ebrake works,  didnt test abs as mensioned above, ride control works, fog lights  dont work, might be fuse. and i didnt check the trunk for water damage sence it was covered in alota snow. he wanted 1500 and i said i cant see giveing him more than 600 for it and he said he understands. also their is another guy looking at it so he's probley going to try to rip him off for more money, but if not i have a week from today to get money and try to buy it if he dosnt get more out of the other guy. so... thats where it stands. thinking maybe if i walk up with 500 in my hand he'll bite. if not at least i should be able to get the title from him.

... good job.  It's all about not being over the top.  Gotta let him think about the money... then show him money!  Cash talks.

My car had hydro's on it when i bought it, the trunk was covered in oil cause the pump was jb welded... and the cylinders leaked too!  constently filling it up with motor oil, and recharging four deep cycles.  Then they caught on fire... needless to say, my trunk is empty now, but it still shows signs of foul play, but nothing i can't live with.

sry, forgot to mension that it idols at 1500 rpm? now my last one didnt idol that high, maybe 1000ish. im thinking maybe its the iac but i didnt get a good chance to look at it being as it was snowing and all... also he has a book of recipits about a quarter inch thick. stuff like oil changes, injector service...

well, with my (limited) knowledge, if he's kept ever receipt for stuff like oil changes, and stuff like that, well, to me, that aint ...
Not that Im raggin him or the car-that's not it.
But if he bought new struts, tires, battery, or stuff like that, then that's all good.
Oil and filters, injector cleaning, that's maintenance that has to be done to keep the car in order-can't really pass that cost along to the next owner-that's part of having a car.
(just my opionion-nothing personal intended)  ;)
Good luck on the purchase, if the other guy doesn't get it!
