Cooling Fan Setup

Calling the electrical gurus.

On my 87TC I have a Taurus fan running through a manual switch that was already on the car. I would like to ditch this setup and take human error out of the equation. I've got enough things to pay attention to.

I just need a little help or confirmation with the setup.

I am going to run the fan through the factory setup, the IRCM. Subbing the low speed Taurus fan for the original primary fan and the high speed for the original secondary fan. The Taurus fan has three wires at the harness and one wire splitting into two at the motor. I am assuming this is the power wire. Would it be ok to run the original power wires for each fan through the single wire for the Taurus Fan wires and connect the corresponding grounds as mentioned above? Then put my switch in the A/C circuit (A/C is gone) for manual hi-speed fan operation. Or is that way too easy?

And until I can afford an EEC Tuner I'm thinking about using one of these TempChips from DC Control. Not a fan (xD) of the turn on temp of the stock fans.

I thought I had a link to the IRCM schematics but I can't locate them now. I will update as soon as I find them.

Sounds like to me you need to by and after market fan controller and be done with it. I've got a Hayden unit that is fully adjustable and it kicks on with the A/c like it should. They also have preset units. They don't cost that much and after several times trying to get the Factory 84 setup to work I would hate to see what you are in for wtih the 87 stuff. Just my thoughts on it but do what you want.

Success! Well at least partially. I took a drive around the block (car is running great BTW), came back and the fan came on while idling. I love it when something finally goes according to plan.

it only comes on when I shut the car off. When running I can't here it.I'm only on low speed.

Ford used the same color coded wires for the Taurus Fan and the TC fans. I just matched the colors together and it worked. You don't have a TC so that really doesn't apply to you.

The only thing I'm worried about is what happens when the primary and secondary fans are "supposed" to be running at the same time. Maybe it'll go into hyper-speed mode. :D

Actually yes I think that is what happens on the Taurus.

I wired my fans up on my 88 a fairly odd way.  I used two relays, one for each fan.  I used the off output on the relays to light up lights on the dash to tell me when the fans were off.  I have two switches, one for each fan.. because both the fans running at the same time would actually bring the temps way down on the car.  The switches controlled the output from the after market fan thermostat. I have a 3 core radiator.  In the winter with both fans running my heater temp would drop down to an uncomfortable level.  Most of the time I ran only one fan, summer or winter.  I have the stock TC fans on my car, the fit with the 3.8.
