by what i can tell the build date is somewhere between 3/9 and 3/14/64. pre V-8 availibity which wasn't available until 4/21 or so. sold on 4/17/64 or at least i think it was being they sold 22000 mustangs the first day.

Yes it will be somewhere around the 608th Stang out of San Jose(vehicles are assigned VIN numbers on paperwork before it's ever built...  They DO NOT come down the assembly line in numerical sequence... SJ did not start Mustang production till July(see link)... Dearborn had probably already cranked out 30-35 thou by that time...

well . i thought i was working on a piece of history not another rustang. the car is very rough but original. all we have at the shop is the shell and drivetrain and one seat. it does drive pretty good though. the dude who owns the car loves it so it does have a good home. i was all stoked about it what a let down

I always wondered when they were actually built, since my b-day is 1-9-64

You just missed being a tax deduction for '63... :D

It will have a date code on the door tag with the date of production... Since San Jose was just starting to build Mustangs, it was probably built on the second or third day of production... Code is day/month, July is "G" should have something like 15G on it...

In the late '80s I owned a '76 Double Mistake(Mustang II) that was the 26th car for Dearborn(6F01Y100026 or similar, still have the tag)... That should have made it a pre-production(pilot)unit, but since the 75s & 76s were so similar, they may have not built test run vehicles that year... Makes no difference now, I junked it... It had been hit fairly hard in the passenger side(Roof was buckled), but it still ran and drove fine... In fact I used it for work for over a year till I got a '78 that needed a engine....It was a 4cyl, 4 speed "Stripper" with absolutely no options other than a AM radio(but that was prob std)...

Guess it would be fun to get the 999 report from Ford, just to see what it said.... UMMM what'd I do with that tag??
