Off topic question.

It's a mechanical related, but not a Ford related, But maybe one of You probably know the problem...

Okay, 2 years ago one of My friend bought a 1991 Pontiac Firefly (suzuki swift) 3 cyl 1 liter automatic, the cars was around 70kmiles (120km), the engine idle was (and is still again at near 100kmiles) a bit erratic, shaking a bit, but when You engage in reverse or drive the engine shake a lot, like the ashtray pop out of the dash...

I closed the main vacuum line to check for a leak hose, no changes, compressions was 150-135-145 (left to right), new plugs and ect, ect, a month ago I changed his water pump and timing strap, changed a little sensor on the firewall near the wiper motor, NOT THIS!...

The car shake in rev or drive, but when You accelerate a bit, the engine don't shake, and go at 60mph without no shaking, it make this only when in rev or drive with the brake on, and a bit in idle, the engine run goos, no knocks or any weird sounds...

The only bad is the engine take a quart of oil at 250miles (leak from a main seals).

It's a CFI engine, not full injection, I guess it's a sensor or one injector in a CFI carb???, but I'm very not good on a CFI or TBI or whatever computed engines...

Any hints will be very appreciated, cauz on the forums related for these cars, nobody replyes...

Sorry for the off topic, but I try here...

Thanks a lot,

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. If not in the lines then maybe an intake gasket .

I guess something else, but I don't have a time to check very well, cauz the guy work 12-16hours a day in a Pizza delivery, and when he's off I'm working, BUT Your guess is maybe RIGHT, this spring when I put out My bird for the summer, I'll enter this "tuna can" in the garage, and check from a-z around the intake and the CFI, but it's not a vacuum leak, I checked all around the engine, and closed the main vacuum from the carb, and no changes...

Thank You for Your input!:dunce:

Any other inputs will be appreciated...

The idle is approx 6-700rpm, I increased at 1000rpm, shaked MORE less, but shaked too fast eheh!, and I don't liked the "TOCK" in the trans, leaved at around 6-700, or maybe 800rpm at My ears...

Thanks,

I drive frequently in the winter this car, and except I hate to drive this "mouse", this car run very well, no vibrations at any speed except at 200mph :grinno: , seriously, no vibrations like a bad torque balancement or whatever, but when I stop at the red light or whatever, it shake very hard, I dont see anything on the rear view mirror cauz it shake!!!...

I guessed a vacuum leak the first time My Friend was purcased this car, but it's not the case...

I don't have any chilton's or haynes of it, and again, I'm not very good in a CFI or TBI fueled engines....

And I missed to write this in My first post, the spark plugs (recently changed) was burned equal and not oily or overheated, it was good to see...

BUT in this 3 cyl engines, in a CFI carb here's a two injectors, maybe one will be off or blocked???, I really don't know and don't know these systems, I'm a old timer mechanic guy.

Hey, just noticed this. My first guess would be a burned valve but since the compression is good that would not be the case.

Have you checked codes? look at the fuse box under the drivers side of the dash, there is a raised socket for a fuse, take a spare fuse and plug it in there, turn the ignition key to 'on' and the check engine light will flash out codes, code 12 is normal. Get me the codes and I can tell you what they mean.

Check the wiring under the black relay/fuse block beside the battery, you might have to remove the battery and washer fluid bottle to check. There is a primary power wire that corrodes melts over time and can cause some problems.

Also check the cap/rotor and plug wires.

Theyre really simple engines one you get to know them
