To find TDC on my engine I just pulled out the plug on the #1 cylinder. I then turned the crankshaft with a breaker bar and watched through the hole with a flashlight.

You can see the valves looking through the plug hole?

You can't look in the #1 plug hole on a 3.8 unless you have removed all the anti-pollution hadrware.

No, just to find TDC. I used other methods to determine if it was on the compression stroke or not.

okay so i got the bolts off my starter but i don't see a hole big enough to get it out and i was just wondering if anyone knew a way to get it out of the v6 without jacking up the motor

When we did it, all we did was gently " nudge" the tranny cooler lines out of the way. Came out fine. Not sure if a V6 is the same as an 84 V8 but just my:2c:

the 84-87 v-6's suck ass. You can't pull shiznit or move anything. The #1 spark plug is almost inacessible.(sp?)

I'll be we will have to pull the motor mounts and jack it up on the oil pan.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

I think some of us are talking about ignition timing and some of us are talking about cam timing.

if you turn the crank and not the cam it will not start i lined up the dots and rotated them until the slot lines up on the crank i put it together and it fired up except for the MAP sensor coming unhooked and allowing too much fuel consumption about two gallons or more in three hours and lots of black smoke good luck
