Need some quick headlight help August 07, 2006, 12:08:08 PM Any of you guys know the part number for the 86 tbird headlights? Are all four the same, or are the high beams different? Also, have any of you rewired the lights so that all four come on as regular lights? Thanks!! Quote Selected
Need some quick headlight help Reply #1 – August 07, 2006, 12:48:04 PM If you go to Autozone or Checker they should have a catalog that will list the part numbers if you are looking to replace them.As for wiring them together, you might have legal problems if your highbeams are on constantly. Unless you mean replacing the highbeams with regular headlamps, but Ive never heard of anyone doing that. Quote Selected

Your switch and wiring are not designed to carry that much current. Also, if you use hi/lo bulbs in place of the hi-only bulbs you will probably lose brightness in high beam mode. If you look inside your hi/lo headlights you will see that the elements inside the bulbs are blocked by a metal shield (or, if it's a "bulb within a bulb" the top of the inner bulb is painted black). Hi-only bulbs do not have this blockage.Being constantly "flashed" by other drivers, in addition to probably being pulled over all the time, would be enough of a discouragement for me. Instead I'd find an 83-86 TC bumper and install fog lights... Quote Selected
Need some quick headlight help Reply #4 – August 07, 2006, 02:03:10 PM I cannot help in the part number but my thoughts on lighting... is have your normal 2 low beams on and when u need high beams on u can rewire it to have both hi and low beams on at same time... which ive found to improve visibility to me.... either that or im imagining stuff again. This isn't your imagination - you can actually temporarily get the same effect by holding your high beam switch back. I would bet, though, that it's not good for the wiring. The ground pin on the headlight (and the wiring going to it) is only designed to carry the current of one element at a time, and even then it can barely handle it - put an 80/100 bulb in and you'll see what I mean. Lighting both elements at once would double the current, which would probably melt the wiring and cause a fire. Not to mention how hot that little bulb would get with both elements fired up - it would probably melt the headl;ight housing in an 87-88 (or any car with plastic headlights) if the bulb itself didn't explode from the heat first... Lighting your low beams during high beam operation would have dubious benefits anyway. It certainly looks brighter from the driver's seat, but in reality all you're doing is lighting the ground up closer to the car. In theory any obstacle in that area should've been lit up by the high beams further down the road (before you got so close to it, I mean) anyway... Quote Selected
Need some quick headlight help Reply #7 – August 07, 2006, 04:28:16 PM I bought some universal fog lamps for my car and mounted them to my bumper using just a thin metal plate as a backing on the inside of the bumper. The plate keeps them from bouncing around at high speed because the plastic bumper would flex too much on its own. After those were in I angled my headlights up slightly more than they were before because my fog lamps were getting everything from right in front of my car out to about 20 feet. That increased my visibility without having to mess with the highbeams at all. And with the highbeams on I can see everything for about 150 yards which is perfect for driving down Wyoming interstates at night. Quote Selected

Need some quick headlight help Reply #9 – August 07, 2006, 05:29:32 PM that is how i make all mine stay on for breif periods of time. but the wireing can be redone to accomidate the load iirc. to me it seems if the cars high beams miss the center section... so with the low beams it makes me feel a lil bit more comfortable... just my personal preference Quote Selected
Need some quick headlight help Reply #10 – August 08, 2006, 04:54:07 AM i just slapped a set of cheap-ass wal mart driving lights under mine, made a heck of a difference...course, clear headlight lenses from my TC made a lot of difference too, when i put them on...now for a TC bumper so i can use my "custom" tc 'driving' lights...
