Fairmonts, a little confused about body style? July 14, 2006, 12:07:15 AM So I was flipping through the Bulletin Board tonight (local thing where you can place ads for free, so all kinds of interesting cars are in it), and came across two Fairmonts listed. One is an '82, with 71K, for $600, and the other is a '79, with 85K, for $300. Both are probably junkers, but I may call about them just to see.Anyway the point of my post- I did a little search online just to make sure on the body styles, because I thought the '79 was the "box body" and the '82 was the "futura body" (what I call the "newer" ones). However I'm getting some conflicting reports on the '79, as whoever that was that posted here a week or so ago said they got a '79 and it was a "box body," but when I searched I found 2 different Cardomain pages with '79s and they were both the "futura body" cars. What's the deal there? I like the box body ones a lot better than the futuras, really... Quote Selected

Kinda like back in the days when you could get a Mustang with a hatch or "trunk" body style... (of course I'm no expert on fairmonts)... Quote Selected

There were also 4-dr box tops and wagons. All were available for all model years starting in '78.My '80 Zephyr is a Z-7 (sport coupe) Quote Selected

Fairmonts, a little confused about body style? Reply #6 – July 14, 2006, 01:31:22 PM I remember the Futura being the sport coupe, then there was box 2 and 4 door, plus the wagon. The futura was always 4 eye while the others generally were 2 eye (there may have been exceptions like with a ghia package). In 81 or 82 I think (not sure) the 2 door box was dropped. I do know at that 81-82 time frame the 4 door cars all got the futura designation and were given 4 eyes. I think it was done to make the car seem a bit more upscale at least perception wise. Fairmonts, a little confused about body style? Reply #7 – July 14, 2006, 08:49:56 PM In '78(first year) I believe they were all box bodies and were just called Fairmonts or Zephyrs. In '79 the the mini T-bird/Cougar fastback styling appeared and those models were the Futura and Z7. As time went on the Futura and Z7 names were also applied to the box versions(as were the quad headlights on the 4 doors)... So 27-28 years later it's kinda confusing...As far as sport coupes, both the Furura and Z7 had option packages with bucket seats and floor shift. I owned several of both body styles in the mid '80 but only my lone Z7 had the Sport package(Mercury probably called it by some other name). Quote Selected
