Need a 3.8 for my 87

Pretty much says it all. I'm considering rebuilding a 3.8 to replace mine, but it has to be a local pick-up. I'm in the Louisville, KY area.
Would also consider another 87-88 Cougar needing engine work if the body and interior are nice, but do not want to start over again on another. Again, I need local pick-up.

I'm looking at a couple options, and don't know which I'm going to do just yet.

Let me know what you got...

Dave

It is a running motor that is still in the car. I dont want it since I'am going to a V8. I'am not going to rip it out unless it is summer or I know someone wants it. If you want it, I will tear it out for you only if I know for sure if someone is coming to get it. I hate to s this running 3.8 but if no one wants it for FREE then I will. I understand it is a long drive but the offer is still open.

87 3.8 CAT,
Hey, I've got an '84 3.8 in an LS Cougar.  It's runs good, from what little I've drove it.  It does have a coolant leak when it gets hot, which I think is a bad freeze plug.  It does not smoke at all like a blown head gasket.  I'm located in Marshall, IL, about 15 miles west of Terre Haute, IN.  I'm within a semi-reasonable distance from you, I think.  It's not perfect, but I wouldn't charge a perfect price, either.  An '84 should be identical to an '87, but I could be wrong.  I know it's a CFI motor.  Pulled like a lot bigger motor.  Let me know.

srv1, I REALLY appreciate the offer, and Cougar8775 for offering to help, but I'm sure I'll never be able to pull off the trip to New York. Too much going on here. My wife and I take care of her Grandpa and she has so much going on with school to add to it.

WOW...I've never been a part of a group as generous to help as everyone is around here. These guys are the reason my car has lasted this long. Without the help of so many here when I first got it, I'd have been lost.

Thanks again...

fordman3, Illinois sounds much better, how much would you need for it?

Can anyone else help me know for sure that the 84 will work in the 87 without computer or harness changes? Any other differences to be concerned with? I need this to be as simple as possible. I know the local yard has 2 of the 87's, but they want $150 each and that feels steep needing rebuilt. Maybe not...

correct me if i'm wrong but a 84 CFI is different than an 87... i'm pretty sure the 87 is fuel injected like a taurus 3.8 motor.  I don't even think the 84 has a real computer in it... just a bunch of sensors and stuff.
84 TC 302 -5.0L/t5/7.5 locking rear and a 3.45 gear, Edelbrock Intake, Aluminum Heads, Edlebrock 65mm Throttlebody, Edlebrock Cam, 24lb injectors & MAS Air Sensor calibrated via chip,  BBK headers, Catback H pipe, Magnaflow lers

No its not. The 1987 was the last year of the CFI. In 1988 they went to multiport fuel injection and other things.

87 3.8 CAT,
Sorry about the delay.  As far as a price goes, how does $125 sound, including the computer.  Please remember, I honestly don't think the motor needs head gaskets, but I can't swear to it.  I really feel like it's a freeze plug.  I can guarantee it doesn't need to be rebuilt.  It's got ~114k on it.  Do you need an AOD tranny, too?  It'll be way easier to pull the tranny out with the motor.  Even if you don't need it, it'll get pulled out and stored or resold.  Let me know if you need it.  The price above doesn't include the tranny.  Later.

Give me a little time to figure out exactly what I'm going to do. Got some thinking to do to decide my best route. Thanks...
