8.8 troubles

I drove my car for the first time in months over the weekend to hear a howling from the rearend.  This is the 8.8 I put in last winter and since have rarely driven the car.  Since rearends scare me I took it to my mechanic friend.  After looking it over he says my carrier is shot!  He also had to put all new bearings in.  I'm going to look at it later today.  What do you guys think I should do?  Junkyard carrier?  Or is there an affordable aftermarket solution.  How many splines do the axleshafts in a TC 8.8 have...I'm thinking 28-spline.  Maybe I just need to upgrade it now.  The plan is to someday be throwing close to 400 hp at this thing so I want to build it to last but at the same time money is a big factor.  So far I have about $300 in parts and labor in just the new bearings (about what I paid for the rearend in the first place grrrr).  What do you guys think I should do!  This is frustrating to say the least.

Hmmm,....  sounds like you shoul take it so somene that will tell you that a howling is caused by an improper ring and pinion pattern, rather than someone who will try to replace your bearings for a howling noise.  Bearings have a growling noise, now a howl.  Also, "carrier is shot"??  I have seen carriers that will have the hole for the pin become enlongated, but that creates a clunk, not a howl.  Trying to figure out what on a carrier would cause a howing noise....(sarcasim)

Well I probably wasnt thinking when I said howling.  At the time I was trying to remember if it was howling and just typed that.  I also had not when down and looked at the rearend yet.  The noise I heard was a clunk when you let off the gas...thats why I took it to the shop.  Sorry for the confusion there, kind of makes me seem like a dumbass now don't it?  As far as the ring and pinion go they look fine.  I think what happened is someone ran the diff out of fluid at some point or something.  One of the spider gears kind of tried to weld itself to the carrier and ruined it.  As far as the bearings go I probably could have just got by with having some of them replaced but he went ahead and did them all.  Oh well.

Well, if something broke in the rear end,ie. spider gears, it would be a good idea to replace the bearings while you are in there because of the metal shavings from the broken/worn parts.  Dont forget though that a clunk can also be caused by excessive backlash of the ring gear.  Your car looks good, is that a sport?

Thanks man its not a sport.  Yeah he had to adjust the backlash slightly too.  Right now I'm trying to find somewhere to find an 8.8 28 spline diff to replace mine.
