Sensor Location for Full Digital Dash? March 08, 2006, 07:46:15 AM I have the opportunity to get a full digital Dash off a 88 Cougar to replace my base dash.I need to know where the water and oil sensors are located..I presume the fuel is with the pump (i may be wrong). Can anyone help ?The tach is another problem i'm working on ....Thanks in advance Quote Selected
Sensor Location for Full Digital Dash? Reply #1 – March 08, 2006, 08:42:18 AM The water and oil sensors are in the same place they are with your existing dash - the oil is down by the filter, the water should be on the intake manifold near the water neck (I'm not sure about that one, though). The fuel sender is in the tank, and it's separate from the fuel pump bracket - if you drop your tank you'll see two "senders" - you want the smaller one.The tach wire simply connects to the green/yellow wire on the ignition coil. You'll also need to connect to the wire at pin #34 (fuel flow) at the ECM to get the tripminder functions of the full digital working. Quote Selected
Sensor Location for Full Digital Dash? Reply #2 – March 08, 2006, 07:24:38 PM Thunder ChickenI've read the Instrumentation guide on your website. I know you states that a V6 cluster wont work on a V8 and visa-versa. But why wont it?I checked with a Ford Parts Dept. today, they only listed one full digital cluster part number (can't get one of course). Do you know if there is (if you know where is it ?) a component wired up or taken out between the two of them?Basically what I'm geting at is, I have a chance to get a v6 Full Cluster and i want to put it on the 5.0.I've diving into some new territory here and help is always appreciated. Thanks in advance Quote Selected
Sensor Location for Full Digital Dash? Reply #3 – March 08, 2006, 08:50:41 PM actually the full digital will work on a v-8. i took one off of a v-6 and put in there the only major mod is to ground the tach on a different pin i dion't remember wich one it is but the guys here were nice enought to help me theey should be able to help. any one know the right pin??? push come to shove i take the cluster out and find it. Sensor Location for Full Digital Dash? Reply #4 – March 08, 2006, 08:53:30 PM The V6 cluster will have a tach calibrated for a V6. If you install it on your V8 it will work but the tach will read wrong.I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the tach can actually be calibrated for any engine by using a certain terminal on the cluster connector (called the "tach strap") - you ground it for one engine, leave it disconnected for another, and connect it to positive for another, but I forget which is which and which terminal to use. I think the info was on the old board - perhaps Masterblaster can help?*edit* Raser13 beat me to it :D Quote Selected
Sensor Location for Full Digital Dash? Reply #5 – March 08, 2006, 09:03:50 PM yeah thats what i did for mine i just can't remember wich one to ground for v-8. also if your swiching to digital don't forget to do the 199 mile/hour mod from bondocougar. by the way you do realize this mean a complete rewire of the clip behind the cluster right. Sensor Location for Full Digital Dash? Reply #6 – March 08, 2006, 09:18:39 PM Yeah I didn't think it was a P'n'P job, but what the fun in that. Actually I'm doing all the reaseach throughly before I cut any wires.Since the interior has to be worked on anyway I figured it woud be the best time to start.Believe me this job will probably be easy compared to my final modifications to the car. Bascially i'm putting parts on the car that was never engineered to have been on their (or even on a car ) in the 1st place. (and no it not a plyboard spoiler )I just wish I could work for Ford and do stuff like this. Quote Selected

I can't remember which one of these engines it reads for when you ground both straps but that's really not important. P.S. Eric, if you're reading this, this might be a good thing to add to your site along with the speedo modification and digital cluster swap instructionsDaryl ------*****------the fuel flow goes to pin #34 on the engine control module(if you take the connector off you can see the numbers) both tach straps are on the grey connector(left side)pin #8 is tach strap #1 make sure it runs to a groundpin #9 is tach strap #2 make sure it does not go to a groundyou can install or remove these anytime without frying anything Daryl ------*****------Let me try this again. There is only one full digital cluster, it can be used on 4, 6, and 8-cylinder engines. The presence or absence of grounds at the back of the cluster determine for which engine the tach is calibrated. Daryl ------*****------I'm gonna try this, you will need:1. a fuel tank sending unit from the donor car2. a coolant temperature sensor-this is a two wire sensor used bythe EEC, not the one-wire sending unit you are using now3. an oil pressure sending unit for a car with buttstuffog gauges4. the new cluster with both connectors(be sure to cut the harnessas far back as possible)5. 3 miles of automotive wire, I'd also recommend shrink tube andsolderThe worst part of this project is changing the fuel sending unit(dropping the tank), the rest just takes some patience. Replace your one wire temp sender with the two wire temp sensor(#2). Hook the original wire to one side and ground the other side. Your parts car may have the sensor and the pigtail for this. Replace your oil pressure sending unit with #3. Pull the old cluster. Use these as a guide to rearrange the wires:http://www.coolcats.net/tech/general/base.htmlhttp://www.coolcats.net/tech/general/digital.htmlYou will need to lengthen some and remove others. The fuel flow wire comes from pin #34 on the EEC. You will not need either tach strap. Let me know if I need to clarify anything.Daryl ------*****------ Quote Selected
