The only difference, and I think this is pretty much across the board, is, Cougars got chrome mirrors and Birds got black, which usually turns to a dull gray. chrome Mirror's needed badly Reply #11 – November 29, 2005, 01:20:46 PM They are not 'adapter plates'...they are wind splitters. The idea was to keep the air from creating a noise around the mirrors, and also to channel the water around the mirror housings when driving in rain. It was an NHV solution.1983-86 mirrors have the 3 mounting studs directly bolted into the housings. 1987-88 mirrors have the 3 mountings studs in the splitters. The splitters are then screwed to the housings. Therefore one should stick with 1983-86 mirrors for 1983-86 cars because they will mount correctly without any modifications. Quote Selected
