Who knows their Ford part #'s!? Premium sound radio jargon

The grandpa marquis radio is flipping me the bird. I literally do not want an aftermarket HU. Very happy with the Premium Sound + my sub using high input wired to the back 6x9s.

Tried the radio from my old '87 Vic, did nothing. Sounds like it must be an HU from a Premium car. Checking with yards on car-part.com...most are on the shelf so they can't just go look at the door speaker grille on the non-existent car.

The Vic radio (non premium) is E7SF 18B865 AA,  with 8720 printed below that first line.
The Marq radio (premium) is E7AF 18B865 AA,  8713 below.

The E7XX should be more important, no?  A couple of places actually list E7AF online, haven't called them yet to see if they ship parts. I have a hunch the E7AF is the dead ringer.

Would that 8700 number be of any significance? Just some production line tracking number/serial?
I haven't had a factory radio fail yet, but as a result of this I'm probably going to buy 2 or 3...:hick:
1987 20th Anniversary Cougar, 302 "5.0" GT-40 heads (F3ZE '93 Cobra) and TMoss Ported H.O. intake, H.O. camshaft
2.5" Duals, no cats, Flowmaster 40s, Richmond 3.73s w/ Trac-Lok, maxed out Baumann shift kit, 3000 RPM Dirty Dog non-lock TC
Aside from the Mustang crinkle headers, still looks like it's only 150 HP...
1988 Black XR7 Trick Flow top end, Tremec 3550
1988 Black XR7 Procharger P600B intercooled, Edelbrock Performer non-RPM heads, GT40 intake AOD, 13 PSI @5000 RPM. 93 octane

So "today I learned".....the E7AF turned out to be the most important piece. That and the AA are the application. (Village Motors in Fleetwood PA was very knowledgeable on this, I was shocked. Who's from that town on here? Can't believe it's not off the top of my head...)

But the middle number says it's a radio. They had an E7AF radio and my sound is back! :)
I wonder if it's the same thing for a Thundercat radio. Were these cars available with Premium and no EQ graphic equalizer? I wonder if that makes a difference.

So, are the radios in cars with premium sound actually different than the ones without? I've pulled a bunch of them with both options and they all look the same to me.

Yes, the cars with the electronic cassette radio like below either with or without the Premium Sound option will look the same.
(this particular car does have the Premium Sound option)

Just focusing on just the ’87-’88 cars, depending on the trim level and how the car was optioned, there were 3 different looking head units.

The base radio was an electronic AM/FM without cassette (4-speakers), optional on base cars and standard on upper trim levels was an electronic AM/FM with cassette (4-speakers).
The Premium Sound option could be added to any trim level and it got you the cassette head unit a separate amp, 6 upgraded speakers and wattage went from 20 to 80 watts. This system could be optioned out without the Equalizer. If the EQ option was checked, it automatically upgraded you to the Premium Sound option. When equipped with the EQ, a different head unit was used that didn’t have the fader  (it was on the EQ) and had a slider for the balance control.

Brent thanks for that info!
I've been meaning to post again...partly because my question wasn't exactly relevant to our radios...

Typical Panther radio with the AM/FM rotary switch and station scan  in the middle.

I found this ebay ad just now looking for a  picture. http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-1980S-FORD-LINCOLN-TOWN-CAR-CASSETTE-RADIO-E5VF-18B865-8701-/252325583563?hash=item3abfc6dacb

Which actually screws everything up. E5VF. And whaddaya know, Premium Sound right there on the front face. I have to look at mine again, I literally don't know if it says that on the radio. I feel like it mustn't otherwise this problem would have been WAY easier to solve. E5 should mean ~1985 so maybe things changed.

Jandm, as soon as I saw your post I had that "a-ha" moment. I knew it was a regular poster. I wish I lived in the middle of nowhere. There are some yards in western NY that are good. Here near the capital it's just too easy for every yard to s out everything more than 10-15 years old whenever the metal gets expensive.

1986 was the changeover year and the 1985 and older radios used a different style wiring harness plugs compared to the '86-'88 style.

That '85 radio in the eBay ad from looks like the correct radio for a Thunderbird/Cougar with Premium Sound, but without the EQ option, however the VF designation in the part number means it is was originally a Lincoln car line radio. So it may be wired differently for a different amp set up compared to the Thunderbird/Cougar version.

For example, this is the radio that my XR-7 originally came with. It's has the Premium Sound option, but not the EQ option (which was extremely rare for '85). It looks the same, but has a "SF" Thunderbird/Cougar designation in the part number.

I am just curious because I have had a bunch of the 87-88 Turbo Coupes with and without premium sound, and the radios all look the same to me.

What's funny is I have an over abundance of fox tbird/cats here in the yards local to me. Ask Cassity about his trips up my way.

There's also a good chance the radio came from one of my cast off parts cars. With s being so low (think $50 a ton low) I just donate what's left to village motors. Makes for a good neighborly relationship.

That's awesome. Google maps says a little over 3.5 hours from me to there. So yeah I may make a trip down there myself at some point.
If you should get word that they are ever thinking of clearing stuff out let me know. I'll just spend money stupidly in that case LOL
