Need help some wiring questions for 1983 tbird v8 car September 10, 2015, 08:24:27 PM 1. I have a base 1983 thunderbird 302 v8 car. (no cruise) It had the steering column in it with the horn button on the turn signal lever, you pushed in for the horn. I have replaced with a 1984 thunderbird steering column with a horn button on the steering wheel with cruise. (I am not using cruise at all) I know what the two plugs for the horn and cruise on the new column is, but my question is I need to know what color wire was from the old column that triggered the horn relay when you pushed in the horn on the turn signal lever. I have found the dark blue wire that goes to the horn in the harness and plugged into the horn. I am assuming that the horn button send a ground wire to activate the horn relay to send 12volt to dark blue wire to horn?2. I have a plug hanging out on the left side of the fuse holder, not sure if it goes there or was moved, but the colors are green, light green/white, and white/purple. The middle wire flashes when the hazards are on, have not got anything on the other two wire yet. All the lights flash on the car when hazards and blinkers work. Any thoughts?3. I have a small plug near the steering column that has a black/blue and black and is 12volt hot all the time. Any thoughts? Quote Selected
Need help some wiring questions for 1983 tbird v8 car Reply #1 – September 11, 2015, 01:51:19 PM Don't have any 83 diagrams but the 84 EVTM shows the turn signal stalk horn button. My 84 didn't have the turn signal horn button and the owners manual doesn't mention it. So I guess they either phased it out during the 84 model year or the EVTM never got updated.Anyhoo, the diagram shows the turn signal horn button not using the horn relay. It puts 12v directly to the horns. The steering wheel horn button provides the ground for the horn relay. Quote Selected
Need help some wiring questions for 1983 tbird v8 car Reply #2 – September 11, 2015, 03:59:29 PM Thank you softtouch, but before I saw your post I came home this morning from work and started digging into it some more. I traced the blue wire back from the horn to the steering column plug that was used for the 83 column. I jump 12v to the blue wire and it sounded off. So that told me that in 83 they did not use a horn relay (I also read on FEP that 83 mustangs did not have a horn relay either with a side horn button). So since I have a 84 column with 84 steering wheel with horn button in the center, I went to my 84 wiring harness that I kept from a parts car and took out the horn relay and wired it up just like the factory did. The horn works well now, and if I get a Grant Wheel I can have the horn button in the middle. However I have not figured out the two plugs in the pictures yet, probably just for extra features that came on some loaded out tbirds. Need help some wiring questions for 1983 tbird v8 car Reply #9 – December 28, 2015, 05:53:40 PM Ok, I got the grant wheel, but having issues getting the horn kit to work on the kit, I can ground the black wire to the center of shaft and sound the horn, but when I wire it to the kit, nothing. There were some foil tape over the bolt holes for the wheel to mount to hub, I left those there, I guess they help transfer ground to plate. Any suggestions would be helpful Quote Selected
Need help some wiring questions for 1983 tbird v8 car Reply #10 – December 30, 2015, 07:02:27 PM Got it figured out, had to make a ground wire by using one of the bolts that holds steering wheel to the hub. works good, wish I would have took a pic before button horn cap on. Quote Selected
