TFI Issues

I own a 1986 Cougar with a 3.8 TBI. Car has 68,000 original miles. I'm encountering problems similar to those spoken of involving TFI. No DIY mechanics I know feel comfortable fixing this since you supposedly have to pull distributor then replace TFI which then requires timing the car which everyone has had problems with. I've seen a piggy back idea involving the TFI but understand it to be a short term fix.

Is there a way to piggyback old TFI and place new TFI someplace better ?

Any ideas or suggestions on the TFI problems ?

Untrue.... you DO NOT have to pull the distributor.

1.) Using a hammer and some other hard object, preferably a chisel make a mark on the metal where the distributor and block meet.

2.) Loosen the bolt circled in the picture below

3.) ROTATE the distributor to a point that you have access to the mounting screws of you TFI

4.) Remove and replace the TFI module.

5.) Rotate the distributor back to the exact location where the markings line up that you made in step #1

6.) Retorque the distributor hold down bolt.

The main problem with the TFI being on the dizzy is heat and that you have to get to it to replace it. What I did was get the TFI mount from an 88 3.8 cougar it was mounted on the RAD support. The I just took and old TFI Gutted it and used it to mount and hold the 3 pick up wires in place. Then I just ran the 3 wires to the new TFI and mounted it right behind the grill. He are some pics
