windshield wipers

I need some help with my 97 Cougar. The wipers do not work on slow, fast or the delay mode. However if I push the switch to activate the pump they will go through the cleaning cycle. The wipers will operate three or four times and will stop. To get it going again, one has to push the switch and it will work again for three or four times and it will stop.

My wife took the car out today it is very cold up here today it is 15F. I suspect the wipers were frozen and my wife turned them on to clean the windshield. She claims she only turned them on for a second (?).

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

It could possibly be a bad multifunction switch.

Thank you. Would you recommend replacing it? I have to figure out how to check it. Thanks again.

the controller manages all the operations by way of an on board relay and various related piece parts.

My first guess would be the controller, or governor.

Thank you.  I found out how to check the switch. By measuring the resistance between the contacts. As soon as it warms up I’ll remove the switch and check it out. It is very cold up here now.

Presently I can use the wipers if needed by using the washing mode it does three or four wipes. I have another car if needed and my old one is on storage for the winter.

I do not know when you talk about governor , are you referring to the control module? How does one to check it? I know The module it is located with the fuse box.

Thanks again, any other ideas will be appreciated.
