sway bar play

did some sweet looking exhust work on the 20th and then had an intermittant low oil warning chime come on so i got under the car to look at stuff.

I pulled myself under the car by the sway bar and I noticed it shifted to the driver side about 1/4'' very easy.

is this normal or do i need to adjust something to sort of "preload" the sway bar.

again, it easily moves left to right 1/4'' or so.

this is buggin be and makes me wonder if i am putting unwanted torque on my control arms by not having this set right.

If the mounting bolts are all tight it sounds like the bushings may be worn.  Those long, skinny bolts that pass thru the end links like to snap though, but when that happens it makes quite a racket.

Well mine doesn't move when it's on the ground so I'd say no there shouldn't be that much play at all.

ok,, Ill look closer because i think i need to tighen the end links but if the metal spacer tube is bottomed out,, im not really sure what to look at next.  never had this happen before and i think thats why i feel a slight shimmy up front,,just a tiny bit.

Well, the only thing that holds the sway bar from side-to-side motion are the chassis mounts.  The endlinks will have no "real" control over that.  That being said, the chassis bushings will still allow for some shifting.

How old are the chassis mount bushings?  They are probably worn a bit, but unless the bar is loose and can move up/down or back/forth, they are still doing their job.

If you're concerned about it, just replace the chassis bushings.  I'd use poly there if you haven't already, but that's just a personal preference.

Mine is solid, absolutely no movement if yanking on it.  Its a mustang bar with new poly bushings on chassis and end links.
