OK, i was workin on a 74 f100 2wd 302 w/ edelbrock 650cfm carb and performer intake. Not a bad setup. So anyways i was workin on changin the radius arm bushings, the passenger side basically had no bushing. I got the chain around coil spring and tight, and i let a little bit of the jack under the spring so i can get the mounting bolt out of the top.....and my clip holding the chain broke... So in about 1/2 a second, several things happened. 1) i bout $h!t myself, the spring unloaded all the way, luckily i didnt get it unblolted yet, or ida been screwed, then it flipped the jack under the truck, the truck didnt fall, i had it on 2 jackstands. But it took several minutes for my heart rate to go down, So im takin the rest of the day off and tomorrow im goin to get a bolt instead of a clip to retain the chain. Just thought id share that.

i didnt take a chance, my chain clamp dilly-honker(that word is in spell check) broke. Although i did have to pull my shorts out of my a$$. Thats not a bad spring compressor you have

runnin some kind of odd springs that require a compressor?
all the i-beam stuff i have done, ranger and f-series, i have never used a spring compressor. once the shock is loose there is little to no tension stored in the springs at full droop.

yeah, but id prefer to have a chain to prevent any chances at all of it doing what it did earlier, but im gonna use a bolt tomorrow, and not a "high strength" clip.

I think Gumby's point was that it shouldn't have done what it did at all. When you unbolt the shock the axle just hangs with no tension on the spring (same as my Cherokee). The spring usually extends to full height when the truck is jacked up by the frame with the suspension hanging, and only the shock is preventing you from simply pulling the spring out. You shouldn't have to clip it at all.

I actually couldn't get the stang springs in. they were about 2" longer then the space I had. Taking the old ones out was easy. I just lowered the jack and pried them out. A compressor was the only way to get them babies in. :hick:
