The guy doesn't know what he has, its a '72 or at least a '72 front clip... The '73 had the big snow plow front bumper...

BTW that's a base Torino, the Gran Torino & Torino Sport had a different header and grille...

'72 Torino Sport... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4e/1972_Ford_Gran_Torino_Sport_SportsRoof.jpg

This is a '73... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1973_Ford_Torino.jpg

That guy is wrong as well, that's a Grand Torino Elite(could have "Limited" stuck on it someplace, but basically it's same car Carmen is drooling over), the BIG LTD was the full size ford...

What an idiot that Elite seller is for stating that it is an LTD.

The Elite was the Grand Torino Elite in 1974 only. 1974 was a mid year release. For 1975-76 it became a stand alone nameplate and as young as I was I do remember the sensation surrounding it. It's no coincidence that it looked like a scaled down version of the bigger Thunderbird. When it was decided that the big Tbird was going to be dropped and the name continued on the redesigned Torino/Elite/Montego/Cougar platform it was no longer necessary for the Elite nameplate to continue. What a great move it was to put the Thunderbird name on this platform since 1977-79 set sales records for the Thunderbird nameplate. Ford should have been wiser to have gone with a plan much sooner to base the Thunderbird on the smaller Torino platform. Prototypes based on the Torino platform were considered in the early 1980's.

Anyway, I always loved this Torino platform and all it's variants. I had a 1978 LTD II back in 1974 and I loved it. However these cars are so huge to me now. When I see them in salvage yards I am like bewildered that they were so big, and I don't remember thinking my LTD II was so big when I had it. So, I am quite comfortable with the size of my 1984 Tbird. The 1972-76 Tbirds are so enourmous! It's hard to believe that people wanted cars that big. They were all hood and girth not so much room inside.

If someone is looking for a '73 Gran Torino, there is one on CraigsList in Northern California:

Found it the other day, not a bad looking car.

i was under the impression you liked some of those mid-late 70s gm mobiles also.

wasnt thinking about it then but point taken on the transporting and purchase from trying to bring one up there where your at.

Yes, the bent window Impala would be on the list as well, and I could probably find room for an El Camino or Monte Carlo, too. And don't let's forget the 77-79 T-Bird Tom is talking about, belt buckles on the trunk and all...

I don't remember any of the '77-'79 Cougars like pop had having the trunk straps...

His '79 Coug was a Mercury 40th anniversary model, but other than having a Lincoln paint color, I don't know of anything special about it... Only saw one other one like it, so I suppose they were fairly rare... He bought it from my uncles dealership in WV and if I remember correctly, pop said Gary(uncle) said it just showed up on a delivery and was never actually ordered for the dealership... If I remember, I'll ask next time I'm up in WV...

The "Sport decor" option added the luggage trunk straps and different wheels on the late 70s T-Bird.
