Possible Transmission Problem December 06, 2009, 03:56:37 AM So I've been chiming in on someone elses thread about a possible transmission problem. First off, the car shifts fine from 1-2-3 and down from 3-2-1.The problem lies in overdrive, the car seems to make a sluggish shift into OD. Usually it will shift around 40 and when I take my foot off the gas around the same speed it usually goes into OD. The past couple of times I have driven the car, it seems to be winding up a lot more before shifting into OD. I'm driving on the same roads and everything. The car is an 88 with an 87 SO 5.0 thunderbird motor and transmission. Just for curiosity, at what mph, do you guy's with SO 50 shift into OD? I've checked the fluid level, and the Tv cable, both are okay. The car, doing down a hill the other other randomly downshifted into 3 and the car started to engine brake. Its never done this before, and it hasn't happened again. The tranny has about 80k miles on it and I've never had a problem. I feel like its probably something small or out of adjustment. Possible Transmission Problem Reply #1 – December 06, 2009, 12:56:03 PM my 88 5.0 shifts 40 to 45 depends on where im at in the gas. but not sure on how yours vs. mine is winding in 3rd to fourth.but not sure on your down shifting. Quote Selected
Possible Transmission Problem Reply #2 – December 07, 2009, 11:21:54 AM When my SC worked perfect, it downshifted at 40 (4-3) and upshifted (3-4) at 45 with my foot off the throttle. Quote Selected
Possible Transmission Problem Reply #3 – December 07, 2009, 03:47:58 PM Okay. Sounds about what mine is doing. There is a small exhaust leak, maybe it seems like it is reving higher? But the downshift is wierd. Quote Selected
Possible Transmission Problem Reply #4 – December 07, 2009, 04:23:43 PM yeh it basically goes OD at 40. used to shift it with my foot. i'd say not to just check your tv cable but make sure its working 100%. check the whole thing. an exhaust leak usually wont fool your perception of revs in an automatic car. at least not a bird in my experience when my exhaust fell off. Possible Transmission Problem Reply #6 – December 08, 2009, 12:37:13 AM yep 40 on the dot with the digi speedo. it might have to do with shifting it with my foot (aka letting off in 3rd at 40) i never liked to let the trans just shift on its own so never did it unless i was lazy then i wasnt looking at the speedo. Possible Transmission Problem Reply #7 – December 08, 2009, 12:41:21 AM okay. Thats what I thought mine used to shift at. Does your car have a tach? What rpms it at? I know when I put the motor in the car the speedo gear was a little off, that could be it too. I dunno, i'm leaning towards there isn't a problem I'm just used to driving the 442 that doesn't have OD. Quote Selected
Possible Transmission Problem Reply #8 – December 08, 2009, 03:47:53 AM mine is at 40 or so too. It will be at 1,000 on the digi dash after shift and about 1600rpm's before. Seems to like to kick it into 3rd around 35-38mph. I can't remember the exact speed. Quote Selected
