Mustang interchange- Brake/Exhaust

I'm trying to get an idea of what Mustang parts will fit my 88 Sport in the area of exhaust & brakes. Are the Mustang GT brakes bigger than the Sport and will they swap out ? 15 years ago my friend swapped a 5.0 HO in his TC. He used Mustang exhaust. The only mod was extending the extension pipes off the H-pipe. does that sound correct ? I'm on a negatice budget so I plan to buy used parts.

Yeah, you can swap to 5.0 stang brakes, just grab the spindles, rotors, and calipers. Also get the rubber brakes hoses from a decent parts store, and you'll need the adaptor fitting, but ed if I can remember what size it is right now. Since you very likely have the 7.5 rearend with 10 inch drums, I'd keep those, unless you plan on swapping to a TC rear eventually. Those have disc brakes, as you probably know. There's upgrades for that as well, but I'm not as knowledgeable there.

As far as exhaust, it just needs to be lengthened, other than that, Mustang H or X pipes work, although some brands fit better than others and so forth.

I just put TC spindles and rotors on my Sport this evening, have some calipers from an '89 GT, but I'm going to use them for the core for Mark VII calipers, as they have a bigger piston than the Stang units. The good thing is, the ball joints and tie rod ends are the same between the 10" and 11" brake equipped cars, at least as far as '87-'88. :D

Happy wrenching!;)

Thanks. I think I might make the trek to Norwalk, Ohio for the Fords at the Summit show & swap. Maybe I can find some good used parts there. Not much left in NYC as most of the Fox Mustangs have long since been driven to the grave.

And some brands won't fit with the Tbird factory floor shifter at all... Been there done that...

If you're only upgrading to HO specs, use a stock Stang "H" pipe...

I used a summit brand off road H pipe with a stock stang H pipe hanger and had to make one dimple to accommodate the cable bracket.  Other than that perfect fit.

My X-Pipe came from Pypes.I had to make the same dimple.No big deal.Now that I have the 5 speed,it doesn't really matter.LOL.

Is exhaust noise increased when you run the offroad pipe ? I took the cat off my Capri back in the 80's and that made it much louder inside the car. So much so that I put it back in. I'm no longer street racing but I do enjoy ample power. If/when I have to rebuild an engine I will definitely upgrade to bigger cam, GT40 intake & heads. Long term goal is a V3 Vortech.

It made mine louder. Not crazy loud, but louder.I have Flowmasters as well.the lers will play a big part of that.I would swear that after the 5 speed swap the car was louder.Crazy but true.

I did not go full bore due to funds, and having decent lers/tailpipes.

I used the summit H pipe walker mustang extensions, and my existing walker quietflow lers, and stock tailpipes.

Mine is no louder at idle, and a tad louder when accelerating but nothing I'd call noisy.  I was afraid it would be too loud, as I wanted quiet, but if anything I ended up disappointed there was hardly enough sound difference to show I went true duals.

Side note I had to extend the passenger side stang extension tube something in the area of 4 to 6 inches to reach the ler.  Maybe someone knows of the Lincoln mark extension would reach since it is a longer car.

Will a Mustang H-pipe fit with a AOD? Im asking because of the column shifter linkage. I have true duals now but the pipes from the manifolds to the lers are 2" and no crossover.

The floor shift is where most of the problems are. The colum shift should work. The mark 7's I belive had the colum shift with stock mustang headers.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Mark VII's were floor shifted.Totally different floor shifter setup than our cars though.

Yep the column shifter works fine with a H-pipe. I have the Summit off road H-pipe (2.5" diameter) on my T-bird with a column shifter and have no clearance problems.
